Tsunami
Update
The
UNFPA has responded rapidly to support the victims of the
tsunamis, committing up to $1 million and additional staff
for rapid health assessments, hygiene needs and health supplies,
including water purification tablets. A "second wave"
of disaster is looming as people face health risks from
contaminated drinking water and devastation of health systems.
UNFPA
is particularly concerned with the long-term impacts that
this crisis will have on women and girls, who in the past
have been hit especially hard by natural disasters. For

The response
from Americans across the country to the Bush Administration's
decision to cut the $34 million in funding to the UNFPA has been
inspiring. It is with great thanks to people like you that the
momentum for 34 Million Friends of UNFPA keeps growing, and
growing, AND GROWING!
But So Are The Needs!
34 Million Friends
is an inspiring grassroots response to the Bush Administration's
decision to withhold $34 million of congressionally approved funds
for the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. This investment
would have been used to provide safe motherhood, HIV prevention,
and contraceptives for women in the world's poorest countries.
We are trying
to find 34 million Americans to each give $1 or more to this causeand
we rely on people like you to help us spread the word. For some
great ideas and easy tips on things you can do, take
action now.
$1 is an accessible
way for all Americans to get involved. You may not think it's a
lot, but see what your contribution
can do.
DON'T FORGET:
