SITES TO SURF

bookadventure.com

Log on to www.bookadventure.com with your child and watch as "Bailey Bookmark" (an adorable dog) and "Rex Reader" (a lovable dinosaur) encourage your young bookworm to join in their reading adventure. This non-profit site, developed by Sylvan Learning Center and Foundation, was created to entice students K-8 to read independently, for longer periods of time, with greater understanding.
How do they do it? At Book Adventure, kids select their books based on their own interests, read it offline, and then earn rewards by taking quizzes to demonstrate their comprehension of their book. With their rewards, they can win cool stuff such as gift certificates to miniature golf and fun family restaurants.
As you can imagine, kids get really motivated to read when there's an opportunity for prizes and interactive games! Also, this site offers a great resource for parents and teachers to monitor their child's progress. Book Adventure celebrates the valuable lessons literature has to give our children by offering them the motivation and tools that they need to embrace each new fascinating story. -Liz Rogers

yahooligans.com
Have you ever "hit the waves" on a Savvy Surfing Quiz? Well, at www.yahooligans.com (the kid friendly version of your own beloved Yahoo!) testing safe web-surfing skills is just one of the many resources available to your child's tiny fingertips. And while helmet is optional, Yahooligans! Savvy Surfing Quiz will help kids and parents learn what is okay to use from the internet, how to treat the information you do find, and how to properly participate in online communities. There is also a homework helper where kids can get help on their assignments from a real teacher within two days!
At Yahooligans! there is more than enough fun and educational stuff to keep hungry little minds well fed. At GameBrain, kids can do animated magic tricks, submit their own jokes, and even play (monitored) games with other kids online. And just in case your SUV hasn't already become your second home, they will have no trouble finding tons of new clubs and organizations for you to taxi them to after school. Kids can also check out top sports stories, take part in a weekly survey, and even view a real WorldWideWebCam where they can travel via live satellite images to anywhere from Madrid to the French Riviera. And with features like Kids Almanac and Ask Earl (where they can post any question plaguing their minds), your kids just might end up knowing everything. (That is if they don't already!) -By Lori Yohe
