Make sure to load up on sunscreen and bug spray. But read the labels: some of these have harmful chemicals that will damage your lines (or the plastic on sunglasses), so look for fishing-friendly sunscreens and bug sprays.

In Praise of the Wet Fly
Oh, thrilling the rise to the lure that is dry,
When the shy fish comes up to his slaughter.
Yet rather would I, Have the turn to my fly,
With a cunning brown wink under water.
The bright little wink under water!,
Mysterious wink under water!
Delightful to ply The subaqueous fly,
And watch for the wink under water!

Shark Ray Alley is a protected area inside the reef of Ambergris Caye, Belize. Nurse Sharks, Rays and Jacks are all conditioned to come from the surrounding area when a boat approaches. Captain Morgan’s Retreat often brings tours to this spot to see this congregation of non-predatory fish gather. Those up for it can even snorkel with these fish!

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the holidays. The first thing we’d like to do is welcome our new sponsor to the show – We are proud to say that we now fish out of a Harbercraft boat! These boats, manufactured in Vernon, BC, have a long history of excellence and a proven record in competition and in practical use. We will be using our boat, equipped with Yamaha power, Scotty Downriggers and Lowrance GPS/Depth finders, along the coast and inland in the coming years. Watch for the Harbercraft logo on our website, the Harbercraft boats in the field and in our new shows.
We are also proud to welcome back all of the sponsors that have carried on from year to year with Fishing with Shelley and Courtney including Islander Reels, Sage rods, Scientific Angler Fly lines, Mustang Survival, Berkley Lines, Rapala, Bare Waders, Bradley Smoker, Suki’s Salons and the West Coast Fishing Club.

Fishing with Shelley and Courtney would like to extend warm wishes for the holiday season and for a Happy New Year! We are looking forward to the coming year and to getting outside to tighten some lines. Here is hoping that all of you and your families have a chance to spend time outdoors as well. Thanks to all of our viewers and to our sponsors – we couldn’t do the show without you. Comments, feedback and suggestions are always appreciated and welcome – if you have any thoughts or wishes for the coming year of shows please drop us a line. And… one more time, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone from all of us! |

We hope the fall is finding everyone well and having enjoyed a great summer. If you are putting away your fishing gear for another year make sure it goes away well rinsed and oiled. Nothing worse than getting ready to head out in the spring or summer with gear that is seized up or doesn't work. Fly lines can benefit from being very loosely wrapped on reels rather than left tight from the last big fish you reeled in. Tune in to see some fishing action from the summer and fall from various places on the coast and even the tropics. Fishing with Shelley & Courtney airs year round so you can get a fishing fix anytime! |

Back from our favourite part of the BC Coast - the Queen Charlotte Islands and the West Coast Fishing Club. We were up fishing at North Island Lodge over the weekend and the fishing was phenomenal! Mark Banning, our guide, got us into many, many Chinook and Coho. Highlights included landing over half a dozen 30lb. plus fish in the space of one day. The action was constant, a number of double and triple-header bites kept us running. Humpback whales came in and out of view during the stay, adding to the scene. Weather at the end of August is often great in the Charlottes and this time was no different. For an unforgettable experience consider visiting one of West Coast Fishing Club's properties - you won't be disappointed! Watch for these shows in early 2005! |

Just back from a fishing first for Shelley and Courtney! We fished Muskie in Wisconsin. Weather was great, so was the fishing. We fished out of Paradise Shores Resort Hotel located on the Holcombe Flowage in the Northwestern part of the state. Two days of a four day visit were spent on the Flowage with Jim Unser and a couple of days were spent drifting the Flambeau River with Joe Flater and Austin Flater. We learned a lot about pursuing the wary fish with Jim and got in to some great action on the river. Watch for these shows in August! |

Fishing reports trickle in to us from all over. It sounds like a great season out there so far. Hopefully there is lots more good fishing to come. We have been out fishing and shooting shows a fair bit lately. We last fished Stump Lake near Kamloops, BC with Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC Director of Sport Fishing Development, Author and Stillwater expert, Brian Chan. We have fished with Brian before and always enjoy the knowledge insight he shares with us. Not to mention he always gets us into some interesting and great fishing! We got into a few nice Rainbows on Light Green and Black and Red Chironomid patterns. We stayed at Stump Lake Ranch at the east end of the lake. A great place to stay while fishing Stump – everybody there looked after us very well. Many thanks to them! Next stop is Musky fishing in Wisconsin at Paradise Shores. Watch for these shows in August! Tight lines for the summer! |

The 2004 shooting season begins! We just got back from some great drifts on the Cowichan River on Vancouver Island. Kenzie Cuthbert and the Cowichan River Wilderness Lodge hosted us for a couple of days. A February drift is a bit cool but the fishing can be very rewarding. We spent one day gear fishing with Islander Steelheader Centre-pin reels and the other fly fishing with our Sage RPLXi rods and Islander LX 3.8 reels. Each day produced some great Steelhead and Brown Trout, including a wild Steelhead Courtney caught and released on the fly (check out the photo!). Kenzie drifts the river regularly and was definitely able to show us where to place our lures and fly for great results. Watch for these shows in the spring. Check back to see where we're heading next. Thanks for watching! Tight lines in 2004! |

We are just back from our favourite spot, the West Coast Fishing Club. We visited North Island Lodge at the north end of the Queen Charlotte Islands and got into some terrific Chinook fishing. Courtney broke the 30 lb. mark and caught her first ever Tyee! Between the fantastic fishing and the Humpback whales that were feeding in the area the trip, as always, was very spectacular. Guests Tom Bird, the host of our Fish Facts, and Kathryn Maroun both landed some great fish. Watch for some unusually clear water and unique underwater footage in these episodes when they begin to air in the winter of 2004! |

Trip of a lifetime!
Want to take the trip of a lifetime to the Best Salmon Fishing in the World?
The West Coast Fishing Club chose the frontier wilderness of the northern
tip of the Queen Charlotte Islands for its locations. This is a meeting
place of salmon on their journey south to spawn. Salmon from the entire
Pacific coast pass by this region because of its prominence in the coastal
currents, its tremendous nutrient base and its place near the edge of the
continental shelf. Big salmon and great congregations of bottomfish
including huge halibut are found here as a result of the tremendous
upwelling of nutrients found at the first landfall off the Pacific. Fishing
anywhere south of these prime, northern Queen Charlotte Island locations
invariably means fishing for just a portion of the total run. Anglers will
will enjoy the incomparable environment, first class equipment and lodging
and the unbelievable fishing. Check out The Outpost, The Clubhouse or North
Island Lodge.

"I look into ... my fly box, and think about all the elements I should consider in choosing the perfect fly: water temperature, what stage of development the bugs are in, what the fish are eating right now. Then I remember what a guide told me: 'Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown and fuzzy and about five-eighths of an inch long.'" -- Allison Moir, "Love the Man, Love the Fly Rod", in A Different Angle: Fly Fishing Stories by Women
