Northwest WorldGateway at Detroit Metro Airport opened February 24, 2002. All Northwest flights now arrive and depart from the new Northwest WorldGateway at Detroit.
Directions and Parking
Detroit passengers can access WorldGateway from the northwest, west and south using I-275 via Eureka Road. From the east and northeast, take I-94 to the Metro Airport exit.
The spacious parking garage offers 11,500 parking spots so finding a place to park is easy. Valet, hourly, daily and economy parking are available.

- Q: Which airlines occupy the new terminal?
A: Northwest Airlines and our partners KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Continental Airlines, Mesaba and Pinnacle Airlines occupy the new terminal. Lufthansa also operates at the terminal.
- Q: Do shuttle buses run between the new terminal and the existing terminal?
A: Yes. Regularly scheduled shuttle buses provided by Wayne County supply transportation to/from the Northwest WorldGateway ground transportation center to the Detroit Metro airport via the south access road (Dingell Drive). Wayne County owns and operates the shuttle system.
- Q: What is the proximity and availability of public parking?
A: There is an 11,500-space parking garage attached to the terminal by an enclosed pedestrian walkway. This is the largest single parking structure built at one time in the world. There are 3 entrances to the parking garage: one on the international arrivals level, one on the departure level and one on the south access road. The ramp will offer valet parking, E-Service Centers and skycap luggage check-in areas.
- Q: Is it easy for passengers to get from one end of the terminal to the other?
A: There are 97 gates in the entire complex. Trams will travel the length of concourse A in 2 1/2 minutes, including a 30-second stop in the middle. The complex has 1.5 miles of extra-wide people movers.
- Q: How will security be handled at the new terminal?
A: There will be 12 security entrance checkpoints on the ticketing level with the capacity to expand by 10 in the future. There will be six checkpoints located on the gate level, four on the international level and two positioned between the hotel and the A concourse.
- Q: Does the terminal have electric carts?
A: There are no electric carts in the terminal. Access is provided via moving walkways and Express trams. If a passenger cannot walk at all and/or needs gate-to-gate assistance, wheelchair assistance should be requested.
- Q: Is the terminal accessible to people with disabilities?
A: Yes. The terminal was constructed in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and meets all state and local building code requirements.
