Frequently Asked Questions
about Tru-Turn Hooks
What are the various parts of a fish hook?
This illustration shows the various parts of a fish hook. Also shown are regular and forged shank cross sections. (Forging adds 15 to 20% strength to the bend.) Hook sizes have always been confusing because there is no single formula one can use. Short-shanked patterns compared to long-shanked ones are a good example. Hook sizes vary with each hook pattern. Hooks may not appear as "actual size" on your computer screen. Please consult printed catalog for accurate sizing.
Remember this: Hook sizes that are "ought" sizes like a 1/0 (pronounced one ought) increase as the number increases. A size 2/0 is larger than a 1/0. On the other hand, when regular numbers such as a 2 and 4 are used, the larger the number the smaller the hook. A size 2 is much larger than a 10.
How does Tru-Turn's original cam action work?
Invented in 1959, Tru-Turn's cam action bend has been hooking more fish for over 40 years! The offset forces the point to turn towards pressure. It's like stepping on a rake. WHAM! It acts as a cam, forcing the handle to rise. They are so effective; the U.S. Army recommended them for the survival kits!
What's the reason for Blood Red® hooks?
During extensive underwater testing, we found that every species in the test tank would strike dark red more than any other color combined. This dark red color simulates the GillFlashTM of feeding fish. This is what stimulates the natural feding response. The BLOODRED® finish is a dye over a bright nickel finish on the hook. It is earth friendly and wears away during use.
