Mountains and Jungles Not only beaches and islands which are the magnet of Trang's tourism, the fertile forests can also draw a number of visitors. The green and lush land of Trang is the source of life of the people here; Para rubber, fruits, vegetable and many other kinds of plantation are all the products of its fertility. These products take consequently a large part of the economy of the province.
And certainly, the green land offers the benefit to tourism as well. The charms of Trang Mountains and forests tempt visitors due to its beautiful waterfalls and miraculous limestone caves. These are the popular destinations in the prolific area of Trang province. Roi Chan Pan Wang Waterfall: Its name can be translated into English as "Hundreds of steps, thousands of palaces". On the way walking to the fall, the rubber trees stand straightly in line as if they were the guards waiting to welcome you until you reach the fall. Free parking is available. At the first stop, there is a big sign with a poem describing the fall written by a monk named "Luang Por Prawate Tanawaro". The description offers you the vivid imagination of how wonderful the fall waiting ahead would be. The further you go up, the more amazed you become by the strange formation of rocks. And when you reach the fall, clean and clear water flows through layers of rock like ladders, around the area is enclosed by the beautiful forests on both sides. It is the formidable experience to swim in the cold fresh water amidst the picturesque scene, isn't it? To get there, take a route No.4 to Wangwiset district, it is situated another 29 kilometers from Khlongchee Crossroad.
The fall can be reached by road by beginning at Lampura Barrack and go further for about 20 kilometers to reach the sign "Namtok Pak Jaem". Continue until you find the office of the Botanical Department in Khao Pu-Khao-Ya area. Parking is available here. Chong Banpot Waterfall: Not too far from the Huathanon Crossroad, on the right, there is a path leading to the fall teemed with a dense forest of Asoka Trees together with the small waterfalls scattering around the area. Then altogether, they flow down along the limestone cliff. Villagers called these scattered falls "Nam Pan" which means scattered water. "Pan" is a word of the southern dialect, meaning "scattered everywhere". Further along the path passing through the Rubber Trees plantations stands the main fall Chong Banpot which got its name from its location. The fall is located between two mountains ("Chong" means "gap" and "Banpot" means "mountain"). The white water flows through layers of limestone terrace, surrounded by the dense verdure. Tone Toke Waterfall: The fall can be reached by a three-kilometer-dirt road. The landscape around the area varies from golden rice field to dense green rubber tree plantations which offer the impressive panorama. The top of the fall can be seen clearly from the distance. When arriving at the first tier of the waterfall, the striking feature is a wide cliff with white water flowing down like rain and plumbing together into a big pond below. The rocks here are characterized by its colorful layers on a thick surface while the rocks elsewhere are usually granite or limestone. The further you climb, the more tiers you find. On the third tier, it is a high, two-leveled fall and the water flows like a tube through the rocks covered by lushly green fern and moss. This fall is an indication of the abundance of the forest in this area. Tone Teh Waterfall: Standing majestically with 320 meters of its height, Tone Teh Waterfall is one of the most attractive and most popular destinations in Trang province. It is under the responsibility of the Forest Conservation Unit which acts in charge of protecting wildlife in the Bantad Range. The source of the flows is the Nakorn Srithamrat Range of which waters never run dry throughout the year. From the distance, the great fall can be seen with the flowing water which is like a silk waving on the big patch of rocks. The wonderful picture of water plumbing mightily through the cliffs, rocks, and top trees down to the streams below always impresses most visitors, making it the king of waterfalls in Trang. Besides, the forests around here are full of various kinds of plants, especially Rattans. Situated 46 kilometers away from town, the fall can be reached by taking the Trang-Pattalung route for about 17 kilometers from town. Turn right and continue the Ban Kra Chong-Ban Had Lao route for about 27 kilometers, and then turn left to the road leading to the fall.
Getting to the fall is quite inconvenient because sometimes the condition of roads is not suitable for large vehicles or ordinary cars. The motorcycle or four-wheel-dive car is then needed. From Hadlao Crossroad, to the right, the road leads to Lamsom Village. Turn left at Ban Lamsom School to a narrow dirt road. At the end, it is the durian plantations that you have to walk pass through. A walk through the plantations, hills and forests offers you the remarkable beauty of each tier until reaching the top of the fall. Kachong Waterfall: Kachong Waterfall was very popular and most visited among Trang residents and other tourists, but after the disastrous flood in 1981, the fall considerably lost its beauty due to the pressure of water that it became a sea of sand. It took long time for it to gain back its magnificent charms even if it is not the same as in the glorious past. However, the fall has its historical importance; in the past, many of Thai kings used to take a trip here. King Chulalongkorn also used to be here; King Rama VI and his consort had craved their signature on one of the enormous rocks here as well. Still, the fall is one of the most popular destinations of Trang province. Apart from being the relaxing place, the fall is also the place for study and research because it is located in the compound of the Center of Nature Study and Wildlife-Khao Chong. Around the area of the center contains Botanical Gardens and museum which features about the conservation and Botany. To get to the fall, follow along the Trang-Pattalung road for about 20 kilometers from town. Then you reach the sign of the Center of Nature Study and Wildlife-Khao Chong, and then you follow the signs indicating the way to the fall. Sairung Waterfall: This is the only one-leveled waterfall levitating 20 meters.
The most impressive feature is performed at 3-5 p.m. of every afternoon; the
mist of the powerfully flowing water makes a perfect angle with the sunlight
allowing the sweetly magnificent rainbows across the cliff. A clear water bowl
below tempts visitor to jump into. Around the area, the densely virgin forest
encloses the beautiful fall. All of these make Sairung Waterfall worthwhile
visiting. To get to the fall, follow the winding Tanon Kot-Thunng Yao Road and across many canals for 14 kilometers until reaching the sign showing the way to the fall. Prisawan Waterfall: This is the medium-sized waterfall composed of 7 tiers by which each offers its original beauty. Its name can describe well the exceptional feature of the fall; "Pri" means jungle and "Sawan" means heaven, and then altogether means "The Heaven of the Jungle". The atmosphere was tranquil but not silent due to sweet melodies of birds. The fall itself is the terraced rock through which the pure-white water flows. Everywhere is green and lush with the cute plants creeping on rocks. The clear water in the big bowl below is great for swimming. After visiting Sairung Waterfall, you can continue on the Trang-Palian route for only 4 kilometers and you will reach the entrance of the fall. Klong Lamchan Waterfowl Park: The Park is declared non-hunting zone located in Klong Lamchan Wildlife Reserve, 17 kilometers from town along the Trang-Pattalung Route. The area consists of a big reservoir which is the home of a large number of teals, mostly found during January to March. The atmosphere is quiet, making it a good place for relaxing. The visitors have to send a permission letter to the Director of the Park before entering. Lam Plok Waterfall: Follow along the winding Tanon Kot-Thung Yao route. It is the six-tiered waterfall; each tier is more than 30 meters of its height. With its huge sized and its quantity of water, the fall is the source of electricity in the district. From here, you get a spectacular scene of the estuary of Palian River.
Buddha Cave: Located in Hauy Yod district, the cave houses the reclining Buddha image with beautiful face. It is believed to have been built in the late Ayudhaya period. Inside the cave, high-class household facilities such as silverwares and potteries were put in there and built into the image to cover the cave so that no one could see. It is supposed that the cave is the hidden place for those precious objects which belonged to high-class people during the Burmese invasion in the late Ayudhaya period. Khao Pra Temple: The temple is situated in Ban Huay Nang before Hauy Yod district. In the temple's area, there is a cave housing the interesting subject for anthropologists: the red symbol carved into the stone wall. Eight more symbols are also found under the cave well. No one knows what these symbols mean or refer to; the anthropologists are attempting to find an explanation of them. For those who love curiosity, at the top of stairs in the cave, the body of a dead abbot of the temple who died in 1963, Luang Por Eiat Suwano is ensconced in a tall cinerary urn. The abbot looks still alive, his hair, teeth, and nails has not decayed. Khao Changhai Cave: The cave is in Namuensri village in Nayong district. The name Changhai means "lost elephant". The legend has it that one day, people in this village was participating in a procession of horses and elephants carrying jewels to be put in a pagoda in Nakornsri Tahmmarat when one of the mother elephant lost its newly born male baby elephant which ran into the cave. The mother elephant could not enter the cave to follow her baby so she stopped and cried in front of the cave. People tried to help her finding the little elephant but they could not do so because the cave was full of curtains of stalactites and stalagmites that hid the baby elephant. And that is the reason why the cave got its name. Pukhaothong Temple: The temple is famous for the reclining Buddha image in Nipparana period. The image is characterized by the southern craft; the Buddha is crowned with "Serd" a hat or crown used only in "Nora", an important performance in southern Thailand. The image here is unique because other images with "Serd" usually stand or sits down but scarcely are they found lying down. Khao Pina: Khao Pina or Pina Mountain is one of the most popular destinations in Trang, situated 45 kilometers from town. Khao Pina is a limestone mountain and a compound of six different caves famed for the spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. At the foot of the hill, there stands Wat Khao Pina where a reclining Buddha image is at a cave entrance. The mountain got its name from the first Muslim named Pina, which means "a person who conquers everything" in Yawee language, who used to settle here. Khao Ched Yod: It is the open zoological garden, located in Sikao district. Generally, its topography is featured by the slight-sized mountain range. At the foot of the hill is teemed with several caves of which only 11 caves were explored. This is a good place for natural study. Thale Song Hong: Thale Song Hong is a large natural body of water like a lake, surrounded by mountains. A mountain springs up in the middle, dividing the water into two sections; hence its name is given as Thale Song Hong or Two-roomed Sea. The lake offers the breathtaking panorama and the water is so clear that you can see the fish underneath. It is located in Bangdi sub-district, 27 kilometers from Huay Yod district.
