Selection Criteria
To be considered for admission, applicants for the
MAT degree must meet the following criteria, in addition to other criteria
noted on the following pages:
- US bachelor's degree (or equivalent) that demonstrates academic ability
- Relevant experience, including language learning and language teaching
(minimum one year preferred)
- excellent communication skills
- demonstrated ability to use experience as a source of learning
- an understanding of the structure and philosophy of the MAT program.
Applicants for whom English is not a first language are required to demonstrate
literacy and oral proficiency enabling them to successfully complete degree
requirements. While SIT has no minimum score that would automatically
eliminate an MAT application, both a standardized test and an oral proficiency
interview are required. SIT considers official results of the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International Education
Language Testing System (IELTS). The average computer based TOEFL score
for students enrolling in September 2003 was 238. The average IELTS band
was 8. Oral proficiency for the same group averaged Advanced on the ACTFL
scale (seventh level of a nine-level scale).
Additional Selection Criteria
In addition to selection criteria listed above, applicants
to the Summer MAT program must meet the following additional criteria
in order to be considered for admission:
- a minimum of two years of language teaching experience
- current employment in a position teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages that applicants return to between the two summers of coursework.
The position must include a minimum of 12 hours of classroom teaching
each week for a minimum of eight months, with a minimum of seven students
per class.
