Saskatchewan

   Land of the Living Skies

Plains Indians are credited with originating the name Saskatchewan. Their word was "kisiskatchewan"- meaning the river that flows swiftly - in reference to the most important waterway running through their territory.

Saskatchewan covers 651,900 square kilometers--more than a quarter million square miles. Contrary to popular belief, fully one half the province is covered by forest, one-third is farmland and one-eighth is fresh water--with nearly 100,000 lakes!

Saskatchewan is located in the heart of North America, neighboring the provinces of Manitoba and Alberta. To the south it borders the American states of Montana and North Dakota. To the north is the Canadian territory, Nunavut.

Saskatchewan is home to Canada's only training academy for Royal Canadian Mounted Police recruits, located in Regina.

Aspen Grove

Aspen Grove Cottage Winery is a small family owned and operated winery located just east of Regina Saskatchewan in Canada's wheat Belt. The orchard’s eighteen acres of rich sandy loam soil, pristine air, long sunny summer days and warm nights all come together as a perfect combination resulting in fruit that is intense in flavour. Although the winters are long and cold the summers are hot and the sunlight is plentiful.

Great fruit wines vinted in Saskatchewan from Saskatchewan grown fruit. It DOES seem odd to have a winery in Sask. with our winters - but the summers are long and hot with tons of sunlight...makes for good fruit! Our family has a u-pick fruit orchard just outside of Regina - saskatoons, strawberries, chokecherries, raspberries, plums, apples, rhubarb, pin cherries, etc. Our wines are made right in the orchard from hand-picked fruit. We are making a unique fruit wine - off dry as opposed to the sweet wines most people are used to and expect. Graham Topp, one of the owners/operators of Aspen Grove

This small fruit winery is owned and operated by a retired couple Diane and Walter Banach. They have been making wines for over 2 years but only commercially since 1996.

found that chokecherries and other prairie fruits ( crabapple, strawberry, raspberry) make excellent wines.

Banach claims to be Sask. first winery starting their business when even the provincial government had no format in place for a winery in Saskatchewan.
