“[I]f I were asked to name the North American Winery that best captures the beauty, the history, the industry and the magic of the total wine experience, that dazzles with finesse as well as sheer power, and that invites the visitor to return, again and again, to make discoveries, it would be Mission Hill Family Estate in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley.”

Mead / Honey wine

Mead is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey and water, sometimes with fruit and spices added as flavorings. Contrary to popular belief, Mead is not simply a sweet wine produced from honey. Mead can be dry, semi-sweet, sweet or include other fruits. Mead has called by many different names including: melomel, cyser, pyment and metheglin. It is typically clear with a slight gold tint and with an alcohol content of between 8-18%. By varying the proportions of honey and water and the point at which fermentation is stopped, a wide variety of types can be produced ranging from a very dry and light, to sweet and heavily bodied. If fermentation is left to continue while bottled, a sparkling mead resembling a sparkling white wine or champagne can be produced.

The main ingredient of any mead is honey. Both the flavor and the color of the honey depend on the variety of the flower that the nectar comes from. Clover honey is light in color and mild, while honey from buckwheat is much darker and stronger. Honey is rich in simple sugars; dextrose and levulose and contains more calories than ordinary sugar in addition to sodium, iron and potassium levels that make it ideal for fermentation.

Mead can be broken down into general categories like Sweet, Medium and Dry as well as still or sparkling.

A little tlc at tinhorn creek

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has recently partnered with The Land Conservancy (TLC) of British Columbia . With this partnership Kenn and Sandra Oldfield have committed to a stewardship approach to vineyard management. For the past few years, Kenn and Sandra have been working with a local biologist to restore a disturbed area of their property back to plant species that are native to the local landscape. The TLC partnership involves a commitment to protect this area in a natural state, as well as habitat areas at the east and the west ends of the property. In March 2004, further restoration planting will be undertaken on another portion of land currently used for storage of vineyard materials.

In addition to restoration, Tinhorn Creek is participating in a snake barrier fencing pilot project with the South Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Program. The snake fence will guide snakes towards adjacent natural areas where they will be less at risk from the industrial agricultural settings. Kenn and Sandra have put forth much energy and commitment towards land stewardship that will help preserve and ensure the long term survival of native plant species such as the antelope brush, and other native plants that are keystone features of Canada 's rare “ Pocket Desert ” in the South Okanagan .

The Conservation Partners Program is an initiative that aims to form a partnership between Conservation and Agriculture in BC, with mutually beneficial results. This initiative will work to protect and enhance the natural habitat that live and thrive on Tinhorn Creek property. General Manager, Kenn Oldfield explains: "Our goal with this partnership is to continue the work we have been doing with land conservation but with a stronger commitment to preserve our property and its natural habitat. We will continue to work on new initiatives such as the snake fencing project as well as further restoration to ensure the long term survival of native plants and the species that depend on them."

Nestled in the hillside of a former gold mining creek, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards sits unrivalled on top of the "Golden Mile" in Oliver, "the Wine Capital of Canada". Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is the premiere winery in British Columbia 's South Okanagan valley and is home of the complete wine experience, the WineLovers' Club. With spectacular views of the southern valley, hospitality second to none, and award winning wines made exclusively from estate-grown grapes, Tinhorn Creek is a must visit.
