Scallops with blueberry sauce is not a good mix.  This unusual concoction used as a euphemism for "Dumb dish of all time," is a reminder that if you're going to create a new dish, unbridled imagination and throwing your favorite ingredients together does not guarantee savory results.

Healthy snacking keeps your energy level high, fills in nutritional gaps and helps you avoid bingeing on junk food when you've gone too long without eating. Here is my list of top snacks:

When you hear the word osteoporosis, do you envision a frail 80-year-old with a dowager's hump?  Unfortunately, some of us could soon be walking in that women's (sensible) shoes.  Fifteen percent of Canadian women have osteopenia, or decreased bone density.  That means they're at risk for developing full-blown osteoporosis, which causes bones to become brittle and vulnerable to breakage, including painful spinal fractures.

For people who feel they've gained a few extra pounds from overeating during this holiday season, there may be a way to turn off cravings.  A new study shows manipulating our memories of food may be a way to influence what we choose to eat.

Overweight is a major risk factor for Type II (adult-onset) diabetes, the most common form of the disease.  So, since a higher percentage of women than men are overweight, they have a higher incidence of diabetes:  Of the 16 million Americans with the condition, over half are women.

What does it say?  Does it say you are a good cook who knows the rules of nutrition, or does it say you must take time to learn them?  The foods you feed your family help to keep them well, help to make them full of vigor and ambition or dull and listless.

When it comes to weight loss, small changes can make a difference. At least that's the message the experts at the American Council on Exercise sent with their latest study.  The question they asked was simple: "Does wearing casual clothing to work encourage more activity in the workplace?"

The idea that some foods can magically melt pounds away has been kicking around for a long time -- remember those grapefruit and cabbage-soup diets?  Of course, while exercise and a variety of wholesome foods are the secret to long-term weight control, there are foods that help us burn calories and quash hunger pangs.  Here are some to help you prevent overeating -- and stay healthy.

The season of personal reform is upon us.  Down with excessive eating,  drinking and loafing about, we resolve -- and then wonder how to do it.  Eating for better health need not be unpleasant, say two  Toronto cooking teachers who have made a business out of promoting healthy eating.

As if keeping children fit and trim isn't challenging enough, now you have dreams of New Year resolutions to contend with.  Making matters worse, children's physical fitness bottoms out this time of year.  In fact, children burn only half as many calories in winter as they do in summer.

All people with arthritis, young and old, can benefit from eating a healthy, well-balance diet.  A good diet promotes overall health and helps to control weight, which can be a factor in some types of arthritis.  This includes a variety of goods, including plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole-grain products, while using sugar, salt and fat (especially saturated fat found in animal products) in moderation. Taking the recommended daily amounts of vitamins and minerals is also an important part of a healthful diet.

Super-size portions are one reason for an increasing number of overweight North Americans. What's normal"  What's too big?  The Portion Distortion quiz shows what a typical portion looked like 20 years ago, what it looks like today and how much physical activity it will take to burn off the extra calories. Test your knowledge of the right-size serving with these questions.

It's a whole new ball game this year, and I am sure we all have a lot of thinking to do when it comes to starting a new routine and helping to lose weight.  We take the time every year to start a new exercise program, a new weight loss program, reading up on the latest new ways of losing weight, and setting our goals to start a new and fresh YOU!
