In case the village came under attack, southern villages consist of two long rows of houses built so as to be nearly impregnable. Bars guard windows and trap doors open to roofs. Houses are built so close together that inside doors make it possible for residents to walk the whole length of the row (over 300 meters) without ever touching the ground. Each stilted house was built by slaves to resemble the hulls of Portugese galleons. Each house stands on piles which rest on a base of stones, resisting earth tremors that often shake the island.
