Alternative Route

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Another way to get from Banjarmasin to Samarinda, and also to experience a bit of Dayak country en route, is to take a klotok up the Barito all the way to Muaratewe, Rp1O,000 (if you charter a speed boat, Rp50,000). From Muaratewe try to reach the headwaters of the Barito northeast by canoe. From the end of the line trek to Intu, which consists of just a few shacks. This is a 46 day walk; you need a guide, Rp2-300 a day and you must supply his food. Walk for a day over logs through swamp country; if you fall off a log, you sink up to your neck in mud (no kidding). Don't expect to cover more than 20 km maximum perday; you can usually do 10 km without too much trouble. Getting down river to Sambuan and Muaramuntai from Intu could be difficult. Allow at least 2 weeks for this alternative way to reach Samarinda.
