Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

A lovely kampung to live in for awhile. Located in the
hills with many waterfalls surrounding it. Stay at Wisma
Tamu, Rp500. Eat in the warungs. You can make it all
the way to Tering by Honda taxi, Rp3000, 3 hours from
Barong Tongkok, passing many Dayak kampungs along the
way. Or walk to Tering on this very pleasant track in
6 hours.Longiram: Boats leave Tenggarong for Longiram
each Thurs. at about 4 pm, Rp1250-1500, takes 36 hours
to two days to reach. Stay in Losmen Tigadaram, Losmen
Longiram, or in Peng. Sukarasa, Rp500, or with all meals,
Rp3500.Longbagun: From Longiram to Longbagun take a
taxi boat, Rp1500-2000. Sometimes government boats travel
the 77 km from Longbagun to Tiangohang north. There
are 3 dangerous rapids north of Longbagun but they last
only to Longpahangai: Udang (200 m long, 2 hours portage),
Relau, and Hiddah (5 km long, 1 hour portage or 3 hours
by boat).Longpahanghai: A very scenic but difficult
to get to area 480 km from Tenggarong; the locale of
the Penehing tribe. From Longbagun to this village usually
only iongbots (long canoes) are available. In the area
live about 1200 Catholics and 50 animists. The Longpahanghai
region has orangutans, tall trees with giant trunks,
true Dayak adatlife. Not only are there Dayaks in the
area, but many different tribes of Dayaks. From Longpahanghai
a few day's upriver to Longapari, there are no rapids
at all. Walk to Sarawak from Longpahanghai. If you make
it to Longapari, they have an Indonesian imigrasi. Travelers
walk overland from Longantoar, Sarawak, into Kalimantan
in one week.
