Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Torajas are known for their remarkable dwellings, quite
similar to the Batak buildings of North Sumatra. These
houses, richly carved and painted, have sweeping roofs
like huge slopeprowed vessels riding in a sea of tropical
foilage. In some villages where the houses and granaries
stand in rows it feels like you're in the middle of
a fleet of ships floating on the wind. The buffalo is
the symbol of fertility, strength and protection from
evil, so the gables of Torajan houses are often decorated
with buffalo horns. Family status is shown by the number
of horns at the entrance of the house. Geometrical patterns
on structures are in black, red and white and are so
perfect and symmetrical that they seem to have been
precisely measured (they weren't). All designs come
out evenly no matter how large or small the surface
covered. Designs on the houses all represent some aspect
of the festivals of A/uk Todolo. Only certain people
are allowed to place certain designs on their houses.
Pushed on rails, these dwellings can be moved from place
to place. At the village of Marante, Palawa', Nanggala,
see some impressive adat houses (but greedy kids are
a nuisance). In each village seek out the Tongkonan
house which is the focus of religious activity, usually
richly ornamented and built solely by the tongue and
groove construction. At the completion of each new dwelling
there's an elaborate housewarming feast of buffalo meat
and pork to which the whole village is invited, a joyful
time when women dance with scarves. Now only 5% of the
people actually live in the trad houses and, like a
model wild west town for a movie set, Pacto Tours has
begun constructing them especially for the tourist trade.
