Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Nine
small islands with active volcanoes 160 km S.E. of Ambon.
In 1619 the ruthless 31 year old Dutch Governor General,
Jan Pieterszoon Coen, exterminated the indigenous population
of these islands in order to acquire control of the
nutmeg trade. Idyllic Stevonish islands, the haunt of
anthropologists and for those seeking a journey into
the 19th Century. The two main islands are close together
and you can get around them easily by prahu. It's not
difficult to make arrangements to stay with a family.
Mako-Mako and Maru-Maru dances are held on occasions
in the Bandas. Bandanaira: The main port of the Banda
Islands perched on the edge of a gigantic dead crater,
the wharf facing 665 m Gunung Api. A sleepy port town
with old Portugese houses and churches speaking of history,
its population is made up of Javanese, Makassans and
Arabs. There are two old forts. Belgica is only 500
m from the harbor. From the roof you get a sweeping
view over the whole town, the volcano, and the nutmeg
groves. Also visit Fort Nassau with its overgrown crumbling
walls. See the lovely old Protestant church. There's
a Christian and a Chinese cemetary near the church with
aged lichen-covered inscriptions; probably one of the
best Collections of old tombstones in all of Indonesia.
vicinity of Bandanaira: Walk to mouldy thick-walled
compounds of the nutmeg plantations in shady forests.
It's said that nutmeg can only grow within the sound
of the sea. Wade in the famous sea gardens of the Bandas
with their dull blue starfish and bright blue fish swimming
over fans of delicate coral. Visit Fort Hollandia on
Lonthoir Island. There's another fortress on Ay Island.
The Pinju Islands in the Banda Sea are nesting grounds
for giant sea turtles.
