Fly Fishing Classes

Trout Trips offers a variety of classes to accomodate every ability, age, and schedule. Most classes include fishing on private water and a low student-instructor ratio. Sign up early, as class size is limited.

Bug Class at riverside.The "Complete Experience Package" is a Beginning Fly Fishing class for adults, consisting of 6 hours classroom time followed by a day on private water. Class size is kept small to ensure more personalized learning (4-8 people). For every 2 students, there will be one instructor/guide. Location, cost and dates are listed below.

Price includes: Classroom time, on-water guides, private water access, gourmet lunch, equipment. Provide your transportation.
Not included: Fishing license, flies, transportation.

The classroom session includes:

  • Information on the latest equipment.
  • Leader set-ups.
  • Knots.
  • Casting techniques.
  • Entomology.
  • Discussion on trout and insect behavior.
  • Reading the water and learning to spot trout.

The on-water day includes:

  • Casting on water.
  • Learning and fishing nymphs, dry flies and streamers.
  • Private water access to fish for steelhead and 5-8 lb. rainbows, along with 20" cutthroats.
  • Fabulous homemade ranch lunch.
  • Rod, reel and hip waders.
  • Fee for the private water.
  • Fee for additional instructor/guides.

Beginners' Flyfishing Class

This 3-evening class covers the basics of flyfishing. Each class session meets 6pm-9pm.

What to bring: Notebook for the first 2 evenings. We will provide hip waders, rod and reel the last night. (If you have your own rod and reel, and/or waders, please bring them.)

Entomology Class

Whether you are beginner or want to improve your fly fishing skills, it is important to know the basics of aquatic insects. This class includes both classroom study and on-stream collection of insects. During the classroom time,we will learn to identify aquatic and terrestrial insects, their life cycles, habitat, behavior, effects on trout and fly selections.

What to bring: Drinking water, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, net seine if available, notebook, pencil, and waders (hip waders are fine). We will provide hip waders if needed.
