The  breathtaking  Sawtooth Valley lies 57 miles south of Challis. Beautiful Redfish Lake sits at the foot of  a spectacular Sawtooth mountain range which is  well known for  Blue Ribbon trout fishing. You can  canoe,  kayak, or take float trips down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.  For winter fun, there is  snowmobiling, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing.  The numberous hot springs in the area make relaxing an out door sport.
Sixty miles from the Bitterroot Mountains and the Lemhi Range is a serene valley where Jim Bridger and Kit Carson would winter. Today, it's the site of Salmon, the "white water capital of the world". From Salmon, you can be outfitted to run the river that Lewis and Clark dubbed "The River of No Return", the main Salmon River. Also visit the brand new Sacajawea Center just one mile east of  Salmon.
Near Challis is the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park where the ghost towns of Custer and Bonanza remind us of the days when mining was king in Idaho. See a historic gold dredge or peer into houses, shops and other buildings dating back to the 1800s.
Eighty miles from Challis is Craters of the Moon National Monument, in the desert near Arco, which lives up to its name - an unimaginable landscape of volcanic rock formations, craters and caves. There is a campground, a seven mile loop road into the monument and numerous trails that lead into craters and caves.
Sun Valley, just 120 miles to the edge of the lush wilderness of Central Idaho, glistens with cosmopolitan sophistication. Railroad tycoon Averell Harriman founded Sun Valley in 1936 to create America's first destination ski resort. Sun Valley quickly became a second home to international celebrities. It has become a year round vacation destination with activities for the entire family.
