Imagine being among the first crowd to enter Daytona International Speedway in February of 1959. After years of racing on the beach, the NASCAR stock cars were now provided a 2.5-mile superspeedway, whose sweeping turns stood some five stories tall, built upon what formerly was a cypress swamp.

Sitting on nearly 500 acres of land, with Lake Lloyd in the infield, with a racing surface nearly 40 feet wide, Daytona International Speedway is indeed impressive. The inaugural Daytona 500 finish was so close it took
nearly three full days before Lee Petty was announced as the official winner of the caution-free event. A second event was also added, on the Fourth of July. Glenn "Fireball" Roberts captured both the Pole and the checkers in the Firecracker 250.

In 1963, the distance was extended to 400 miles and in 1998 the inaugural nighttime running of the Pepsi 400 had to be postponed until October due to heavy smoke from the wildfires that raged out of control all around the area.

Seven-time series champion Richard Petty won the Daytona 500 seven times and has a total of 10 series wins. When it comes to victories, seven-time series champion Dale Earnhardt holds the lead for wins in all points, qualifying races and other racing events. Though it took 20 years for
Earnhardt to succeed in capturing his sole victory in the Daytona 500 after finishing second four times, he has a total of 29 victories in the record books. Cale Yarborough holds the record for most poles won at Daytona with a total
of 12. The next closest driver is Buddy Baker with five poles.
Aside from the first-ever live broadcast of the Daytona 500 on CBS in 1979 -- when Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough went spinning into the infield after taking the white flag and a fist fight broke out on national television -- the 1998 running may well be the most memorable and poignant. Father and son, Bobby and Davey Allison, finished first and second in what would wind up being Bobby Allison's last year as a driver in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. In July 1998, on the first lap of the AC Spark Plug 500, the elder Allison was part of a turn 2 wreck which nearly took his life.

Daytona International Speedway hosts the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, "SpeedWeeks" which culminates with the Daytona 500, Daytona Beach "Bike Week," AMA-sanctioned events, the Pepsi 400 and a host of other racing events throughout each season.
