CLAN

Care leavers of Australia Network

Clan was set up to bring all care leavers of Australia together.  Some Australian children shared a similar fate to the child migrants.  Clan exists to fight for rights and justice.  They have a large library of books which can be borrowed, they also supply information on how to access records within Australia.

Many of the Australian children suffered abuse and until Clan was set up to fight for recognition and justice little was done for these former Ward children.

Clan publishes a regular newsletter which features both information and personal stories together with various contacts.  Clan exists for all care leavers including former child migrants.

Clan now has a web site

A FAMILY APART

RADIO INTERVIEW WITH A FORMER BRITISH CHILD MIGRANT

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hometruths/0313child_migration.shtml

"It is now a matter of public record that this organisation [the Catholic Church] and its agencies deceived us and deceived our parents. It is also a matter of public record that they contravened the immigration laws of Australia. For their own ulterior motives they took the law into their own hands believing that they knew what was best for us and for our parents. 87% of all children from Catholic agencies came to Australia without the consent of their parents. 96% of those sent had one or both parents alive ... Canon Flint, the Superintendent of the [Father Hudson's] Home claimed that the children had been orphaned. This is patently untrue."

what did I do wrong?

A question asked on a daily basis, for more than 50 years, by hundreds of men and women now in their sixties and seventies.  They mostly live in Australia but some are in New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Zimbabwe.  They know that they were not born in those places but in Britain, and cannot understand how as young children they came to be alone in a strange country apparently with no living relatives.

The straightforward answer to that question is you did nothing wrong! You simply had the misfortune to be one of those British children picked out for inclusion in the Child Migration Scheme.  The removal of children from orphanages and institutions in Britain and transportation of these unfortunates to other parts of the world began as far back as 1618.
This pillaging of the British nation's youth reached obscene proportions in the years immediately following World War 2 and ceased only in 1967, simply because there were no more children available.

The acceleration of the 'Scheme' following WW2 was due to the fear expressed by the Australian Government that their country might be overrun by the Asiatic peoples to the North.  The Government therefore requested that British children be sent out (provided they were of good white stock) to populate the country.  This request was wholeheartedly endorsed by Church authorities in Australia, particularly the Catholic Church.  For example, in 1946 the Archbishop of Adelaide requested the migration of British girls to fill the orphanage in Adelaide.  Similar requests were made by other Church figures and not just from the Catholic Church.  The British Government gave the 'green light' and the race was on between various Churches and other Institutions in Britain to send out as many children as possible of the 'right faith'.  The method of selection, and monitoring of method, was slipshod and took no account of the children's feelings.  In a large number of cases the only authority given for transporting a child (effectively for life!) was the signature of a priest or a nun.  Alterations were made to many migration documents, falsifying them so that the chosen child could be emigrated.  Very many cases are recorded where the child had one or more living parents, as well as brothers and sisters but those immediate relatives had no idea of the migration.  In several cases children were migrated against the expressed wishes of the mother or father.  In the years following migration the children were told they had no living relatives in Britain and that their whole life was their future in Australia.  These lies were promulgated by both Governments and by the various bodies responsible for sending children out.  This lead to the overwhelming belief in the minds of these child migrants that they must have done something very wrong that they should be separated from their families in such a swift and permanent way.  That belief has stayed with them for all of these years.

Prior to emigration, promises were made to the children that once in Australia (or one of the other destinations) they would be put for adoption into loving, caring families. The sun would shine every day and they would be very well fed and clothed.  The reality was shockingly different.  Having arrived on the dockside following their voyage the children were separated by sex, regardless of any brother/sister relationships, and carted off to the various orphanages and institutions which would become their new homes.  Once there, the discipline imposed on them was so harsh it would be today the subject of criminal proceedings, and should have been then, most of the children were constantly hungry and they were physically and sexually abused.  This abuse was widespread throughout the orphanages run by the Catholic 'Orders' such as the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Mercy.  Their acts were neither Christian, nor merciful.  Boy migrants allocated to the Christian Brothers were used as slave labour to erect the very buildings which would house them, and which were effectively monuments to the Brothers in charge.  Injuries and illnesses were taken as a sign of weakness, or lack of faith, and were virtually ignored.  The slightest perceived lack of discipline led to beatings and whippings.  The raping of boys by the Brothers was commonplace and repeated.  The traumas caused by this treatment stayed with many boys for the rest of their lives.

Whilst incidents of sexual abuse against girl migrants were relatively rare, the harsh discipline, beatings and floggings administered by the Sisters were equally commonplace and were regarded as an everyday part of their lives by the girls.  A certain amount of schooling was given to both boys and girls but once they reached fifteen years old they were put out of the institutions and into domestic work or farm work.  It must be remembered that a great many of the child migrants were previously well schooled in Britain and of high intelligence.  Their prospects, had they been left in the country into which they were born, would have been very good.  However the Australian Government had it's wishes granted by filling parts of the country with good white British stock, and the various churches managed to keep up their ratios of people of the right faith.

This whole horrific Scheme remained virtually secret until the late 1980's when it came to light, by chance, and by the hard work of Margaret Humphries and the Child Migrants Trust based in Nottingham, England.  Since then a large number of former child migrants have found close relatives back in Britain and have been joyfully reunited with them.

The purpose of this site is to help find child migrants or families by providing information, links to other organizations and a free message posting service for anyone who wishes to use it.

Following the publicity created in the 1980's and 1990's the British and Australian Governments made some attempts at investigating the whole Scheme and the way it was set up and run.  Neither Government has issued a public apology or made serious efforts at recompense.  The current attitude of the various bodies responsible for choosing and sending the children is best summed up by the following extract from a letter of 28th June 20000 from Bishop Howard Tripp, Episcopal President of the Catholic Child Welfare Council.

"Church Authorities and the British Government have expressed the view that child migration in the mid-20th century was in itself an ill-conceived scheme, and also that arrangements for the children could have been handled better.  How decisions were arrived at regarding individual children was largely undocumented and now cannot be known."

Those who hold an Australian Government Pension Concession Card, a Health Care Card, or a Seniors Health Care Card;
Those who have never had a trip back to the UK or Malta (regardless of the source of funding); and
Those who had already formally indicated interest in the UK travel fund and were not able to apply while it was still in operation because family tracing had not been completed.

Note:

Funding will be available for door to door travel, including to and from airport of departure, international airfare, taxes, cost of passport application, any travel costs from the airport of arrival to the home of the relative, travel insurance and a modest living allowance for two weeks.

Funding will only be available for one Australian Government sponsored trip. Subsequent trips will be at the applicant's expense.
Funding will not be available for those who were funded previously by the UK travel scheme.

Subject to demand, the government will review the eligibility criteria in subsequent years and possibly broaden it to include further visits by former child migrants who have received assistance either through the British Travel Fund or the Australian travel fund for reunion visits.

Details on how to access the Child Migrant's Travel Fund will be made available once the Fund Administrator has been appointed.

Former child migrants, who would like to receive a detailed application package when it is available, may send their contact details to the Director, Settlement Planning and Support Section, Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, PO Box 25, Belconnen, ACT, 2616.

a child migrant's experience

"Another train journey from London to Tilbury Docks found another twenty four girls join us from Scotland, Middlesex and Middlesborough.  All this time, and for thirty eight years we were unaware that our group of twenty eight was part of a scheme to transport thousands of children from Britain to Australia.

The voyage was exciting with lots of wonderful activities and plenty of delicious food.  With our talents in singing, we entertained the passengers, for which they collected money for us for Christmas.  All this was very beneficial, as we were kept busy and did not have time to ponder about what lay ahead of us in Australia.

On arrival at Outer Harbour in Adelaide on the 19th January 1949, all twenty eight of us were bundled on a bus and taken to The Goodwood Orphanage...

...We were lined up in the yard and the considerable amount of money given to us by the passengers and crew of the S.S. Ormonde was taken from us.  We never saw that money again...

My bed was in the middle of the dormitory with about forty beds for girls aged ten to sixteen years.  Everyone was unusually quiet which made me feel even worse for they knew that I would be beaten that night.

It wasn't long before I heard Mother Michael's footsteps as she was very heavy and pounded around the orphanage.  The door opened, then she was at my bedside.  It must have been a hot night as I remember cowering beneath the single sheet and when I turned to look, I saw her red, bulging face and the huge thick strap in her hand.  She bellowed "Get out of bed", to which I slid further under the sheet.  The next thing, I felt the strap come down across my body.  It was the most painful thing that I had ever experienced.  She continued flogging me, ranting and raving until I could take no more.  I jumped out the other side of the bed and ran around the dormitory, trying to get away.  I could hear some of the other girls whimpering under the sheets, probably too scared to look.  Sister Rita, who was on duty that night, caught me and dragged me back to my bed, kicking and screaming, where Mother Michael proceeded to strip me, tearing and ripping at my nightie exposing my naked body.  It was then that she became even more infuriated.  She threw me down on the bed and viciously flogged me until she had crushed and shamed me.  She was like a woman gone insane, showing no mercy at all.  The pain throughout my body was unbearable, my mind was in turmoil and I had been humiliated beyond imagination.  I had been going through puberty and my body had been maturing for some time, to be stripped for all to see was horrendous.  I lay there nauseated and feeling utterly crushed, not able to move.  I tried to think of my home at Nazereth house but my physical and psychological pain was too great.  Then I heard her leave without saying another word.  In fact, that was the last time she ever spoke to me, or I to her.  I remember thinking that God would punish her one day.  someone came over and covered my body with the sheet.  I tried to focus on anything other than the pain but it didn't work.  I finally fell into a deep sleep which was a blessing...

The next morning I woke to find everyone had gone.  The nun who had called the rest of the girls had not touched or spoken to me.  That was the way it was to be for the next couple of weeks.

I lay there for quite a while not daring to move and when I finally moved to get dressed, the pain was excruciating, for the strap had cut into my flesh and my clothing was sticking to it.

Each day, I would get up when I liked and sit on the bench under the veranda in the yard, not eating, not speaking or going to church.  I must have been in a deep depression for many days, I'm not sure how long.

Apart from the physical pain, my mind was in turmoil.  How could a person of the Church inflict such pain on a child?  How can the other nuns stand by and let it happen?...

Mother Thomas and Sister Martha must have taken pity on my because they brought me food and coaxed me to eat and talk to them.  I'm sure they must have been horrified at what had happened to me.  Some years later I believe they both left the Mercy Order and became part of a Charismatic Group.

I don't remember ever being seen by a doctor, they were probably fearful of being found out...

...and many of the British and Australian girls were scarred for life.

During those years the nuns were intent on breaking our spirit.  I cannot imagine why they did that when they were supposed to be preparing us for the outside world...

At a time when I was desperate to find if I had some family back in England, I went to Archbishop House on West Terrace to acquire any records that could have helped me, I was turned away...

What a shame.  I might have found my Mother and Father before they died.  I find it hard to forgive them for that.

On 7th May 1997, I visited Sister Christine Cain and Sister Mary Densley at their request...

After two hours of relating those dreadful experiences at the hands of the Mercy Nuns and recalling the awful pain I had been through, sobbing throughout the ordeal, Sister Christine Cain said "Thank you for coming in, I'm sure it has been most upsetting".  I have heard nothing from them since."

"Although it is difficult to know motivation, nevertheless the level of deception, the deliberate giving of wrong information or withholding of information, the policies of separating siblings, all make it very hard to accept that everything was done simply for the benefit of the children.  It indicates an abuse of power and a disregard for the feelings of the mothers and children, and it was certainly felt as such by many former child migrants.  We have seen evidence that as they get older, their resentment and grief grows rather than diminishes.  Those who have become parents feel the enormity of it when they see their own children grow up, and feel reduced by their inability to supply a history and full identity even to their own offspring". http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/cm199798/cmselect/cmhealth/755/75507.htm
