General San Francisco Travel Information
San Francisco is one of the most beautiful and easily recognizable cities in the United States. Her landmarks, like the Golden Gate Bridge, are known everywhere. To book a hotel in San Francisco is to take the first step in a visit that will be too short, but extremely satisfying. Unlike "plastic" Los Angeles, the locals are genuine and the sites are absolutely real. The views from your hotel in San Francisco will probably rival any postcard you have seen and invite you out onto the streets to explore the city's famous neighborhoods.

The densely populated downtown region lies across some of the most undulating terrain ever to be found in a city. This makes for some interesting driving, challenging parking and exhausting walking. Union Square is the tourist center of the district, complete with shops, restaurants and some colorful local characters. From here you can catch a cable car to take you to your next destination or to simply enjoy the scenery of the local neighborhoods.

Chinatown is not so much a tourist center as it is a home for the 30,000 Chinese residents who live in San Francisco. Of course, you can find some tacky souvenirs here; but the real charm of the area is simply walking through an authentic eastern neighborhood in the middle of this western city.

Haight-Ashbury was the focal point of the 60's counter-culture in the U.S. and still retains some of that feel, although the residents of that earlier generation might be disappointed with the definite drift toward mainstream that now marks the neighborhood. Fisherman's Wharf continues to draw tourists and sea lions year after year. Pier 39 is lined with shops and attractions to delight both the young and old. Open air entertainment is also a part of the spectacle at certain times of the year. Fisherman's Wharf is also the entryway to many of the city's other attractions. From here you can catch a boat to Alcatraz Island. Best known for the "inescapable" prison that housed some of America's most notorious criminals, "the rock" also has much of ecological and historical interest.

While San Francisco is a charming city during the day, there is a whole other world to explore at night. The city's Gay community is well known, and there is a wide variety of entertainment for those interested in exploring that side of San Francisco - and themselves. And there is much more. San Francisco boasts many excellent restaurants and clubs, shopping districts, museums and festivals. Concerts, reviews and performances range from the ballet to the symphony to neighborhood clubs with live bands experimenting with the newest sounds. Yerba Buena Gardens is an unrivaled cultural center.

San Francisco is a city that is at once sophisticated and earthy, cosmopolitan and intimate, family friendly and sensuous. Regardless of your tastes, you will find much to love about San Francisco, and much to tempt you to return very soon.
