Announcing the Release of Facing Fear: Helping Young People Deal with Terrorism and Tragic Events
After the September 11 tragedies, the Disaster Services Department of the American Red Cross national headquarters saw an immediate need to build on the existing disaster curriculum and provide new tools for teachers and students, to address this new kind of disaster.
Facing Fear: Helping Young People Deal With Terrorism and Tragic Events, a supplement to the Masters of Disaster curriculum consists of four versions catering to different age groups: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. There are three chapters in each level of the curriculum. Each chapter contains four lesson plans and activity sheets.
The lesson plans include information to help children understand and cope with feelings of fear and anger, cultural and ethnic diversity, media literacy, the role of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and International Humanitarian Law, plus methods to prepare themselves and their families for the future in positive and constructive ways. Lessons are progressively more challenging for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. An instructor authorization is not required to conduct this training.
Facing Fear can be ordered through your local American Red Cross chapter.
