ANDEAN SPECIAL PROJECT

'Shaman (Medicine Man) by Kallawaya is the third in a four part special project by Tumi exploring the traditional sound of the Andes. Each release comes with its own 16 page booklet containing original photographs and text, giving the listener a more complete view of the traditions of the music, the history of the musicians and the culture of the people involved in the making of these unique recordings.

KALLAWAYA - 'SHAMAN (MEDICINE MAN)' TUMI110

The word ŒKallawaya¹ has its roots in the native Bolivian Aymara language and it stands for 'shaman' or Œmedicine man¹. These traditional healers of the Andean region have a profound knowledge of natural medicine that goes back more than 500 years. This new band was set up by four legendary Bolivian musicians, all ex-founding members of the group Rumillajta, first recorded by TUMI in 1984. Their music is a combination of original compositions and arrangements from all over Latin America. The musicians are: Edgar Villarroel, Adrian Villanueva, Juan Carlos Cordero and Saul Callejas with Fernando Jiménez and Windsor Chacón as special guests.

QUIMANTU - 'Pilgrimage to the Andes'

Folk, violins, charangos, pan pipes TUMI082

Pilgrimage to the Andes is a beautiful selection of traditional festive season songs bringing moving violin arrangements into the Andean equation. These songs celebrate the religious lives of the Andean people introducing the listener to music from a mass, festival or Christmas celebration. This is Quimantú's long awaited second album on Tumi following their popular debut Camino al Sol (TUMICD044).

ARAC ANCESTRAL - 'Fusion Andina'

Ancient traditional instrumentation TUMICD083

Arac are dedicated to bringing back ancestral music of Latin America using original and ancient instruments. Through a deep philosophy and historical understanding of their music, they have managed to create a meditative recording which brings to life the music of their ancestors. As in all special projects, this recording will be produced with a detailed colour booklet explaining in-depth the meaning and history of this up until now undiscovered music.

FAMILIA PILLCO - 'violins from the Andes'

TUMI101

The two violins of father and son Reynaldo and Enrique Pillco and the harp of Juan Charalla play the beautiful melodies of the Andes lively marinera dances, melancholic yaravís, cheerful huaynos - popular music created by the Bachs and Schuberts of the Americas. The Pillco family have been based in Cuzco, the heart of the old Inca empire since Manuel Pillco Cuba came there in 1910. A noted self-taught harpist he worked closely with legendary Quechua photographer Martín Chambi, whose unique photos illustrate this disc.
