Following two days of spirited debate at its August 2003 Annual Meeting, a sharply divided American Bar Association House of Delegates amended the Model Rules of Professional Conduct to permit lawyers to reveal confidential information in order to prevent or rectify a client's crime or fraud and to require lawyers to report evidence of wrongdoing “up the corporate ladder” to the organization's highest authorities.
