 Overview of Prague city, Czech Republic
"The City of One Hundred Towers and Spires" and "Golden Prague" are names that evoke the many aspects of this fascinating city, the capital of the Czech Republic. No other European capital contains six hundred years of architectural heritage so completely untouched by natural disaster or war. Since the 1989 Velvet Revolution, when Prague's students took to the streets to help bring down the Iron Curtain, the city has enjoyed an exhilarating cultural renaissance.
Situated in the valley of the Vltava (Moldau) River, Prague is dominated by the castle perched on the Western bluffs. Visitors are drawn to the "fairy tale" aspect of the city but this is only part of its vibrant mixture of styles. Prague is unquestionably a city that is best explored on foot. Its compact medieval core remains an evocative maze of cobbled lanes, ancient courtyards, dark passages, alleyways and churches beyond number, all watched over by an 1100-year-old castle with liveried guards.
The entire centre has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gothic churches, baroque, and Renaissance palaces rub shoulders with Cubist, Functionalist and ultra-modern buildings, classical music intermingles with jazz and rock, while monumental statues sit next to abstract works and even a Cubist lamppost.
Prague remains one of the most popular destinations for backpackers, still being relatively cheap. The beauty and classical elegance of the buildings, streets, passageways and alleys of this "Golden City" will provide a colorful mosaic of memories that will remain long after the visit has concluded.
