Governor Bush honors Red Cross Southwest Florida Youth Corps with award
Thursday, December 23, 2004 Governor Jeb Bush recognized the American Red Cross Southwest Florida Youth Corps of Sarasota with a Points of Light Award for their instrumental work during the recent rash of hurricanes.
"This group has dedicated so much of their time and energy to helping fellow citizens in numerous ways during these difficult times," said Governor Bush. "I commend these young Floridians for their dedication and compassion for others."
The American Red Cross Southwest Florida Youth Corps, a group of 40 students ages 13 to 17, took disaster preparedness to heart and became certified in First Aid, CPR, shelter management, mass care, disaster services, family services and damage assessment.
During the hurricane season, the Youth Corps were instrumental to the operation by manning the shelters, entertaining children at the shelters, collecting and delivering toys to the children, and preparing thousands of meals to people impacted by the storms.
Stephen Heymann, Chair of the Youth Council for the Youth Corps and a survivor of Hurricane Andrew, knows the value of the Red Cross firsthand, "I remember the destruction of my neighborhood and how it looked like a war zone. I also remember how much the Red Cross helped everyone. I am grateful for the opportunity to now be the one to help others in need."
Other projects the Youth Corps have spearheaded include collecting and sending care packages to deployed troops, hosting the families of soldiers at a holiday party, and organizing a letter-writing campaign to thank the soldiers for their service to our country.
The Governor's Points of Light Award recognizes a Florida resident or organization that demonstrates exemplary service to the community.
