Key West Current Fishing Report

January 17th
Key West is a pretty cool place this morning with temps in the low 60s. Up until yesterday the fishing report was pretty darn great! We had some great days out on wrecks in the Gulf with huge redfish up to 22lbs and some nice grouper and mutton snapper. This time of year is great for cobia too. There are plenty of kingfish around on small rock structures in the Gulf and in deeper water off the reef in the Atlantic. This coming weekend is the SKA Hog's Breath King Mackeral Tournament at Murray Marina. If you are in town come on down to see who weighs in the big one. For more information visit

Offshore fishing has continued to be good. Last week we had a nice run of large mahi mahi up to 25lbs. The seas out in the Atlantic were a bit rough with the consistant East to South East winds for the past week or so, but if you can stand the bluster of the winds and waves, the fishing is really super. Sailfishing will continue to be good as will kingfish, tuna and bonito fishing.

On the flats the fishing has been good but this cold front could shut things down for a few days until the water warms up again. Plenty of great action with barracudas and sharks. This is my favorite time of year for fishing for the 'trash can slam' which would be a jack, shark and ladyfish ( I think). We make it up as we go sometimes.

If you are interested in Tarpon season, don't forget it's coming up soon and we still have room in the schedule.

Fishing Variety in the Keys

There is no doubt that Key West and the Florida Keys have the best selection of fishing in the country. Surrounded by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, along with the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, the Lower Keys have it all within reach as far as fishing goes. From big game sport fishing in 1000ft. of water to backcountry fishing for tailing bonefish in just inches of water, we've got it all.

Anglers of all ages and all abilities have at one time heard of the annual tarpon migration. There are few spots in the world where you can get the amount of opportunities to hook one of these giant silver king fish, Key West is one of the best spots. Fly fishing enthusiasts come from all over to cast to these fish on the flats, while other anglers fish for them on light tackle gear in Key West Harbor.

Sailfish in Key West

One of the best fish fights you may ever remember is a battle with an Atlantic Sailfish. Key West has plenty of them in the winter months and all year long they are caught and released here in the Keys. Sailfish jump madly in the air when hooked and are brilliant blue and purple in color when they are 'lit up'. Captains and guides here in Key West use live bait and also troll for these beautiful sailfish.
