New Service-learning opportunities!

Service-learning is a form of experiential education that ties academic course work to meaningful service.  While gaining core and oral and writing intensive credit in the introductory course, students work with populations or environments through placements with community agencies.  Students commit to thirty (30) out of class hours while gaining hands-on involvement, resume building experience, time management awareness, communication skills and critical thinking practice.  In the process they discover often unexplored facets of the community and of themselves.

Service-learning breaks the wall between campus and community.  Over 100 agencies currently use ETSU service-learning students in a variety of placements.  Some of those students provide companionship for the elderly, tutor children, aid the homeless and indigent, serve as role-models for juveniles, and act as conservationists in regional parks.  In addition to the Introduction to Service-Learning course, Advanced Service-Learning and Cherokee Immersion Project are offered annually with future courses planned.  Additionally, service-learning opportunities for off-campus students are under review.
