Resort rentals provide an alternative to use for owners and an opportunity for renters to enjoy the benefits of timeshare ownership on a trial basis. Occasionally, resort rentals may result in a sale, and a timeshare reseller may suggest that an owner offer usage to a potential buyer; most sellers would ask for reasonable compensation or a comparable exchange option in return for surrendering the usage week. Compensation guidelines follow two perspectives: to ask twice the maintenance fee (this leaves an opportunity for negotiation) or to ask one half the rack rate (which is an easily verifiable discount and should not require further negotiation). In most cases, resort renters and potential buyers are seeking discounts, and rental rates are usually attractively priced. Rental commission fees may range from 20% to 50% of the rental amount. Some companies choose to charge an up-front fee or an option of commission or up-front fee.
