Mini guide to Ballina
Ballina is the largest town in County Mayo and is renowned for its hospitality and wide range of accommodation. It is home to the River Moy, internationally acknowledged as a superb salmon fishery.
On the east side of the river lie the ancient Rosserk Friary, dating back to the 14th century and the ruins of Moyne Abbey. They are now overshadowed by St Muredach's Cathedral, an imposing Victorian structure on the riverbank. In July every year, Ballina hots up, with the onset of the Street Festival and Arts Week, which provides a barrage of fun, free events and activities for children and adults. Music, varying from traditional to country and western, rock 'n roll and samba,
fills the streets all week long.
Ballina is a paradise for keen fishermen, and its status as one of the most famous salmon angling venues in the world draws visitors from far and wide. Golfing is also extremely popular, and there are two golf courses in the town itself, as well as three courses within driving distance. There is a public swimming pool catering for the whole family and Enniscrone beach is only six miles away. The Moy valley is an ideal location for walking, and there are numerous trail options, including the historical tour of Ballina. The town is known for its many excellent pubs and its variety of nightclubs and restaurants, including the award winning ‘Crockets on the Quay’.
Nearby attractions include; the Ceide Fields in Ballycastle, the oldest field systems in the world, and the working Foxford Woollen Mills, founded in 1892.
Ballina and the Moy valley can be accessed by car via National Primary Routes. Irish Rail and Bus Eireann offer daily passenger services to and from Ballina. Knock International Airport and Sligo Regional Airport are both situated nearby.
