Mini guide to Sligo

Sligo is a lovely town nestled amongst the rugged countryside in Ireland’s northwest which inspired W.B. Yeats’ poetry. Rich in history, natural beauty, and a wide variety of recreational activities all immersed in a relaxed atmosphere, Sligo is a popular holiday destination.

With majestic mountains to Sligo’s north, south and west, the area’s location among the breathtaking landscape is one of the town’s main attractions. Another is its connection to Yeats. The Yeats Memorial Building, housed in one of the most picturesque Victorian buildings in the town, was donated to the Yeats Society of Sligo in 1973 and is now home to a photographic and audiovisual centre on the great poet.

The Sligo County Museum houses a fascinating exhibit on Sligo’s rich Stone Age history as well as a complete collection of Yeats’ poetry from 1889 to 1936. Sligo Abbey, a Dominican friary founded in 1252/3, has the oldest decorated high altar in an Irish monastic church, dating from the 15th century, and a beautifully carved O’Crean tomb dating to 1506.

Sligo boasts great craft shopping and fine restaurants with excellent cuisine. If you’d like to relax with a pint of Guinness head to one of Sligo’s many pubs, where you will be guaranteed to hear traditional Irish music and experience Sligo’s warm people and friendly hospitality.

For some fresh country air, take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque Garavogue River, or if you’d really like to pamper yourself, spend time at the Celtic Seaweed Baths and enjoy the pleasures of hot seawater, fresh steamed seaweed and therapeutic massage.

By exploring the magnificent countryside around Sligo you can visit the Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs, the largest megalithic cemetery in Ireland and among the oldest and most important in Europe. In the Hazelwood Forest Park Sculpture Trail you will find a unique series of outdoor sculptures from Irish and international artists. The area also offers countless lakes for fishing and recreation as well as first class golf courses.

You can fly into Ireland’s major international airports at Dublin, Shannon, Belfast, Derry and Cork, some of which have onward connections with Sligo Airport. Alternatively there is the well developed Bus Eireann network. Motorists will find that Ireland has few multi-laned highways, but driving is, scenically, a pleasure none-the-less.
