Welcome to the Oak Island Beach House B & B web site! Now that you are here, we would like to invite you to stay at the Beach House in Oak Island, NC where you will enjoy a quiet and relaxed visit to the seaside. While visiting us, you will discover that a bed and breakfast establishment does not have to be a two-story historical building in order to be hospitable and comfortable. The Beach House is the only B & B on the island and it is right across the street from Middleton Park, which has access to the beach with public restrooms and showers. We provide beach towels, chairs, picnic baskets and umbrellas for your use on the beach. We also have bicycles handy for those who would like to pedal around the island. The park has lighted tennis courts and other recreational facilities open to the public.
If you are looking to relax at the house, there are two large decks where you can stretch out on a chaise lounge. Perhaps you would rather pick up a book or magazine and listen to music - or choose a movie from our collection of DVDs and videos to escape for a few hours. Board games, puzzles and a piano are also available in our game room for your entertainment. Every afternoon a light snack will be available; and of course, a full sumptuous breakfast will be served each morning in the dining room - we promise you won’t go away hungry!
Being an avid reader herself, your hostess has named the bedrooms after some of her favorite beach titled novels. We have a cheerful blue, yellow and white Lighthouse Keeper room with a private bath, queen bed, antique dressers and lots of lighthouses. Our Treasure Island room also has a private bath, queen bed and is decorated in an old world theme of navy blue and beige and is loaded with nautical “treasures”. Blue and white is the décor in our romantic Beach Music room, which boasts a private bath, sitting area and cherrywood furniture with an armoir and king-sized “rice” bed. Finally, the Shell Seekers room is decorated in seafoam green, peach and cream and also has a king-sized bed, sitting area and private bath - although this bathroom is down a short hall. You will find all of the rooms cozy and inviting without the intrusion of TV and telephones. Cordless phones are available and can be taken into the guestrooms for private conversation. Computer internet access and a fax machine are also available if you must work!
While there are many things to do around Oak Island and the Cape Fear region, the Beach House is only 30 miles south of historical Wilmington, and it is 70 miles north of the frantic but fun Myrtle Beach. Golfing, fishing, The Orton Plantation, other historical sites, Southport and Bald Head Island are only a short car drive or ferry ride away. And, even though this is a quiet family island, there are several excellent restaurants available for your dining pleasure. We will be happy to make reservations for you!
Although the Beach House isn’t yet on a historical register, it does have its own special history. The Coleman family built the original house in 1954, and it was one of only five houses to survive the destructive forces of Hurricane Hazel that same year. Mr. Coleman was one of the first mayors of Long Beach (the former name of Oak Island) and was instrumental in the development of this community. The Coleman’s raised three children in this house and were the only owners until we purchased the house in 2000. The house was added onto several times until it reached its current size of 4,300 square feet and in 1992 extensive renovations were made resulting in a modernized kitchen and bathrooms. We have done further renovations and remodeling to provide you, our guests, with private baths and a casual laid-back atmosphere. Please visit soon and become a part of our history.
