Breckenridge Ski ResortA timber company first opened the Breckenridge Ski Area in 1961 with only two chairlifts serving few runs on Peak 8. Shortly after that in 1966 a Colorado Businessman established the Breckenridge Ski Corporation. Aspen Bought the Breckenridge Ski Corporation shortly afterwards and for almost 20 years the Breckenridge Ski Resort was operated and maintained by Aspen during which the resort has expanded and opened Peaks 9 and 10, introduced snow making and installed the first high-speed quad ever. In 1988 a Japanese company purchased the Breckenridge Ski Area from Aspen and the Breckenridge Ski Resort broke for the first time the 1 million-skier visits record. Peak 7 opened in 1993, the same year a company called Ralston Purina, the owner of Keystone Ski Resort at the time, bought the resort from the Japanese and operated the resort for a short period of time. Ralston Purina handed over the management of the Breckenridge Ski Resort to Vail Resorts in 1997 as a part of the merger that happed back then. Breckenridge, Colorado was never a town that was build from the ground up as a ski resort town. The Indians knew Breckenridge for thousands of years and they named it Nah-oon-kara. European settlers started looking at Breckenridge for the first time after they have discovered Gold in the area in 1859. Hundreds of miners started moving in to the area and a town of 300+ acres was established just weeks after the discovery of Gold. Breckenridge became a worldwide attraction spot as a ski resort in the winter, and a great place to vacation and go biking, hiking or mine touring in the summer.
