NEWS AND FISHING REPORTS:
May 7-8, 2004
Another great fishing weekend
amongst friends! This weekend Brad, Justus and I (Chris) got to enjoy
a pretty good bite in Venezuela, before returning home in time for Mother's
Day. On Friday we raised 4 blue marlin and 4 sailfish, and hooked 3
blue marlin and 2 sailfish, and ended up releasing 2 blue marlin and 2
sailfish. On Saturday the weather got a bit sloppy, and the fishing
was a bit slower. We raised 3 blue marlin and 3 sailfish, hooked 2
blue marlin and ended up releasing a small 40lbs peanut blue marlin.
It was great to see that the aggression that blue marlin displays has
nothing to do with their size! This peanut ate the largest ballyhoo in
the spread, and gave us a great show right next to the boat. Luis will
be fishing a couple more days this week before he gets ready for his journey
to Punta Cana.
May 2, 2004
Today was one of those special
Venezuela days. The Just Us captained by Luis Suarez raised 11 blue
marlin hooked 5 and released 3. At one point they had 5 blues in the
spread and hooked 4 and managed to release 2 of the 4 fish hooked.
Luis will be out there again tomorrow, and they are going to experiment with
some light tackle action, 16 and 20 pound line class...should be fun.
May 1, 2004
The blue marlin bite
continues to be great! Today Luis and the crew of the Just Us went 2-5
on the blue marlin. They also caught some nice Dorado's for dinner.
They will be back out there again tomorrow, so make sure you check in.
April 21-25, 2004
Hooking the fish
proved to be more difficult then expected for the for the anglers fishing on
the Just Us. In the three days of the Billfish Shootout Tournament,
Captain Luis Suarez managed to raise 14 blue, 5 sailfish, and 1 white marlin
for his anglers, but they managed to hook and release just 1 blue marlin and
1 sailfish. I guess that is why they call it fishing and not catching,
otherwise anyone could go out there and load the outriggers with release
flags.
April 17&18, 2004
Kees and the boys
headed back to Venezuela this past weekend and got a day and a half of
fishing in. They raised a total of 4 blue marlin and 7 sailfish. They
ended up releasing 2 blue marlin and 1 sailfish. We have a great moon
coming up this week, and it will be interesting to see if the 256 blue
marlin releases in 3 days will be broken this yea at the Venezuela Billfish
Shootout this coming week.
February 16 &17, 2004
Great two days of fishing for the Harris party!
In all they released 4 blue marlin, and caught 6 Yellowfin tuna all 200Lbs+.
After catching 5 Yellowfins on 50 and 80 pound test, Mason wanted to
try his luck using 30 pound test. After loosing the 1st one, he
managed to land a 245lbs yellowfin using 30 lbs test. Great job Mas!
January 17 & 18, 2004
Happy new year to all! Captain Luis and
his crew is getting ready for the 2004 season, and we expect it will be even
better than last year. Since the beginning of the year Luis and
Argenis have been getting the boat ready for the 2004 season. The big
project for this off season was replacing the two sliding salon doors with
two hinged doors. However, Luis and Argenis managed to take William
and several of his buddies that flew into Venezuela this past weekend.
In two days of fishing they raised a total of 18 white marlin, 2 sailfish.
They ended up releasing 5 white marlin 1 Sailfish, and filling the box with
12 small yellow fin tunas. Even thought the waters are still a bit green,
the marlin fishing has been surprisingly good, with plenty of bait in the
water. We anticipate the day the water clears...because as soon as it
does the fishing is going to explode, and you can expect double digit
releases. Hope to see you this season !!
November 6 & 7, 2003
The last two fishing days for the Marcel
party ended up being very productive. They raised double digit number
of billfish, and ended up releasing 4 sailfish, and catching 2 Yellowfin tuna
of 50 pound each, and lost another one that was estimated at 250 pounds.
November 4, 2003
A nice variety of fish behind the Just Us
today. Captain Luis Suarez and his Crew raised 6 sailfish, 3 white
marlin 1 blue marlin, and a nice 30 lbs Wahoo today. They ended up releasing
3 sailfish and 1 white marlin and caught a nice 30lbs Wahoo for dinner.
Luis said that the bank if loaded with Wahoo. The Wahoo's are lucky
that I am not in Venezuela these days, because I love to fish for Wahoo.
There's just nothing better than a Wahoo's initial strike on 20 lbs test.
Before you can even get to your rod, the fish has already ripped out 300
yards of line. If that does not get you pumped, you need to find
another sport!.
November 4, 2003
Today the anglers were perfect!
Today Captain Luis Suarez had 3 biters and they caught them all, they
released 2 white marlin and 1 blue marlin.
October 28, 2003
Captain Luis Suarez managed to raise a
good number of billfish today, in all they had 7 biters, 2 blue marlin, 4
white marlin and 1 sailfish. They managed to release 1 blue marlin,
and caught some nice dolphins and Wahoo's. I hope things go better in
the hooking department tomorrow.
October 28, 2003
Captain Luis Suarez and mate Argenis "El
Loco" Santana will be doing some general maintenance these next few days,
and getting ready for a long run of charters coming up in November.
November is my favorite time of year to fish, because more blues show up and
your chances for a grand slam are very good. Last year Justus and I
had a run of 4 straight fishing days with a grand slam. One of those
trips Justus caught himself a personal grand slam.
October 26, 2003
Today the Wallace crew raised 4 white marlin and 3
sailfish. They has 5 biters, and released 2 white marlin. It was great
to see them again, and Captain Luis and his crew showed them a good time as
usual. They can't wait for July next year, to get some shots at the
big blue marlins in the Dominican Republic.
October 26, 2003
The 1st day of fishing for the Wallace was slow, they
managed to raise 2 white marlin, releasing 1 white marlin. Tomorrow
morning we are planning to be leave the docks extra early since we have to
be back at the marina by 4pm so that they can catch their flight back home.
I am sure Captain Luis will do his magic, and make their last day in
Venezuela special.
October 25, 2003
Not only does Venezuela have great fishing, but
the night life is not bad either. The Jansen party proved it this
morning by mustering up just enough energy to walk to the docks just before
noon, to cancel today's fishing trip. On Sunday the Wallace party that
fished with us in Punta Cana will try their luck in Venezuela. In 3
days fishing in Punta Cana back in June, they released 14 white marlin.
Lets hope they have the same type of numbers here in Venezuela.
October 24, 2003
Eric and his large group for from Curacao did
pretty good on their 1st day out. They managed to release 2 white
marlin and 1 blue marlin, and missed a couple of other fish, and had a few
lookers. They will be out there again tomorrow, and lets hope they hook the
sail tomorrow to complete the grand slam.
October 22, 2003
The Remmer party did something special today,
they released a Spearfish on fly today. The spearfish was part of a
double header, and they managed to hook one of them. Later in the day
they also released a sailfish on conventional tackle. For the second
time in two weeks, we have had a Shimano reel fail on us. Today we
lost a 200lbs tuna when the Shimano reel broke, I have come to the
conclusion that you just can't use these reels if you plan to fish in a
harness, because they just can't take the stress. In all we raised 6
white marlin 3 sailfish, and 2 blue marlin today. The Remmer party
will fish one more day before Eric Jansen and his pals from Curacao go to
Venezuela for two days of fishing and fun.
October 21, 2003
A little better luck today hooking the fish
today for the Remmer party. They managed to release 2 white marlin and
1 sailfish, and their hook-up ratio should even get better tomorrow, and
with some luck, they will get their 1st grand slam.
October 20, 2003
Today we raised 10 white marlin 2 sailfish and 2
blue marlin, but only managed to hook 1 sailfish and 1 white marlin.
This was the 1st time fishing for marlin for the Remmer party, so lets chalk
this one up as a practice day, and hope that they learned from their
mistakes today.
October 19, 2003
Today we raised 6 white marlin and 1 blue marlin
releasing 1 white marlin and 1 blue marlin. We did not see the
sailfish in order to complete the grand slam. The fishing has been
slow for Venezuelan standards, this past week we have been raising an
average of 6 billfish a day, and releasing an average of 2 billfish a day.
As we all know this would be great numbers for anywhere else in the world.
October 18, 2003
The day started of great, by 11 am we had
released a 1 white marlin and 1 blue marlin. So we had the rest of the
day to finish up the grand slam, and we got 3 chances at the sailfish, and
sacochoed all 3 of them. That just shows you that sometimes the fish
gods to not want to co-operate and give you a helping hand, but it also
means that the fish gods owe us one.
October 17, 2003
Fishing was bit sow in Venezuela today, but but
we expect it to pick up again soon. Today we raised 2 sailfish and 2
blue marlin, and managed to release 1 sailfish. We also had 3 giant
yellowfin tuna crash the baits, but did not get a hook ups. The
arrival of the yellowfins is good news since that indicates that there is
lots of bait in the water.
October 15, 2003
Found some blue water close to shore, and tons
of billfish including 2 blue marlin, and a giant Yellowfin Tuna. They
managed to release just 1 sailfish, and the tuna spit the hook after a 2
hour fight on 30 pound tackle. Luis and Arginis have no charter on
Thursday, but will be out there this weekend.
October 13 &14, 2003
Since Saturday green water has settled in and
the fishing has been a bit slow. The past two days Luis and his crew
raised 12 white marlin and 4 sailfish, releasing 3 white marlin and 2
sailfish. Today they ran 35 miles out to get out of the green water,
but the fish ended up being closer to shore, there were some boats reporting
a good number of blue and white marlin bites. They will be out there again
tomorrow, and hope to run into them.
October 10 &11, 2003
Boat owner Justus van der Lubbe and his son
Jens (Billfish
Foundation's 2002 junior angler of the year) flew to La Guaira
this past Friday and Saturday, and had a great time fishing with Luis and
Argenis. Jens, insisted on hooking the fish himself and released a
total of 6 whites and 3 sails. Friday they raised 6 whites, 5 sails and one
blue, releasing 3 whites, 3 sails and 1 blue marlin, to complete the
Grand Slam. Jens even lost a
fourth sail when the line just snapped flipping him backwards (the video is
going to be send to Funniest Home Videos). That same day Justus lost a
200lbs Yellowfin Tuna when his 30 pound Shimano reel broke while strapped in
the harness. About 45 minutes into the fight Justus heard a light
crackling sound followed by a loud crack, when the reel housing broke away
from the rod. While attempting tie the line to a new reel, the fish
got some slack in line and spit the hook. This is the third time that
a Shimano reel has broken in this manner (see story
Shimano vs Blue Marlin), and something Shimano needs to address ASAP.
Saturday, they raised 10 whites and 1
sail, releasing 6 whites and catching 2 nice Dorados. They also got to
witness whale on a feeding frenzy right next to the boat which was a
spectacular sight. Father Justus and his
son Jens had two double headers together and with the boating skills of
Capt. Luis Suares and the help of mate Argenis "El Loco" Santana things could not go
wrong. Its was great to see that Jens has refined his drop back
skills, and consistently hooked the finicky Venezuelan white marlin. I
think that next year Jens and his dad should fish the shootout together
since they showed that they make a great team.
October 8, 2003
The fishing was a bit slow today, but we still
managed to release 3 white marlin out of 6 biters. On Friday we have
the honor of fishing with last years Billfish Foundation's junior angler of
the year Jens. He came back to
Venezuela to fish with captain Luis Suarez to make sure he defends his
title.
October 5&7, 2003
There has been no wind leaving the seas flat calm
and the days hot and almost unbearable. Even with dead calm
conditions, Captain Luis Suarez managed to raise 12 white marlin, and
released 4. They will be fishing tomorrow again, and we hope they have
better luck hooking them.
