New Non-Profit Seeks To Save SS Catalina
Friday, February 04, 2005 By Jean Quist A newly formed non-profit corporation hopes to succeed where past efforts have failed: salvaging the 1924 steamship SS Catalina and returning her to a home berth in California before the Mexican government scraps the vessel. Led by retired Navy salvage expert Richard McPherson of Orange County, the non-profit group Raising the SS Catalina Association is in the process of completing the required paperwork to register with the state Franchise Tax Board as a 501(c)(3) corporation.
