New Non-Profit Seeks To Save SS Catalina

A newly formed non-profit corporation hopes to succeed where past efforts have failed: salvaging the 1924 steamship SS Catalina and returning her to a home berth in California before the Mexican government scraps the vessel.

Led by retired Navy salvage expert Richard McPherson of Orange County, the non-profit group Raising the SS Catalina Association is in the process of completing the required paperwork to register with the state Franchise Tax Board as a 501(c)(3) corporation.

ITC: Outboards Not Dumped

In a move that seemed to take both sides of an international lawsuit by surprise, the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled Feb. 2 that Japanese manufacturers did not engage in dumping outboard engines in the United States.

Coast Guard Unveils New Port Underwater Security System

The U.S. Coast Guard Wednesday demonstrated its new underwater port-security system at Coast Guard Integrated Support Command San Pedro, Calif.

The system, which has been in development and testing since November 2002, is now being deployed to Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Teams throughout the nation.

Boat Under Tow From San Diego To Oregon Sinks Off Monterey

Log News Service - A 62-foot boat, being towed from San Diego to Reedsport, Ore., sank on Jan. 31 approximately one mile off the Monterey coast.

Authorities reported that Albion and the tow tug Michael Uhl left Morro Bay on Sunday morning, Jan. 30.
