THE
HAMBURG CELL |
|
In the days following the horrifying September 11
attacks on the United States, attention focused
on the terrorists themselves. One of the most perplexing
cases is that of Ziad Samir Jarrah, who flew one
of the hijacked planes. No one would have believed
that the quiet, pleasant young man they knew would
one day join in a conspiracy of mass murder, would
deceive those who knew him best - including his
own family - and who would sit at the controls of
a jetliner bound for a chaotic end in a Pennsylvania
farm field.
Now a controversial film, commissioned by Britain's
Channel 4 and co-produced by CBC Television, dares
to put a human face on Jarrah, as he evolves from
a westernized student to holy warrior.
The Hamburg Cell airs Sunday, January 16th at
8pm on CBC Television. |

Jarrah's
father, Samir, is a civil servant, and his mother,
Nasisa, a school teacher.
Raised in Lebanon in a secular family, taught in
a Christian school, Ziad Jarrah seemed to friends
and family a most improbable recruit to Islamic
extremism.
Nonetheless, documentary evidence shows that Jarrah
did train and participate in the criminal and tragically
destructive events of September 11th.
Evan Solomon and Linden MacIntyre talk about the
concept of "evil", and if an evil act
must, by definition, be committed by an evil person.
