Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Besides the remains of palaces and burial grounds on several islands near Tg. Pinang, there are even more intriguing palace ruins located further out (at Tembilahan on the mouth of the Indragiri River and in the town of Daik on Pulau Lingga). Travel companies won't conduct tours to these because it takes more than one day to visit them, which would prove unprofitable, difficult to organize, and lacking appeal to the ordinary tourist. So you have to get out to the more remote sites yourself. Snake River Chinese Temple: On an island just across the harbor of Tg. Pinang. Take a sampan for Rp100, entering the small Snake River through mangrove trees. The temple is decorated with paintings. Also visit the orang laut settlement and the Old Town of Tg. Pinang. Pulau Terlukai: Beyond Pulau Penyenget. A spetbot from Pulau Penyenget to Pulau Terlukai costs Rp4000 return; takes 1-1'k hours; see Ramat in Kampung Datuk on Pulau Penyenget. On Pulau Terlukai there's only a lighthouse, no people, untouched white sand beaches, waving palms with shady mangrove and casaurina trees. Help yourself to all the coconuts you want. Kota Piring (or 'City of Plates'): On Biram Dewa Island 30 minutes by spetbot from Tg. Pinang or by taxi from Tg. Pinang Rp5000 for one whole day. By sampan, at least Rp500. Built by the 4th Viceroy of Riau, Raja Haji. The walls of this ruined palace are full of ceramic plates. Another orang laut village on this island.
