Ed's Notes

That any corporation can be comfortable with the hoped-for voluntary (at this stage) departure of fully 50% of it's management echelon, is a damning indictment in itself - confirming what everyone knew - that SAA has been operating as an overstaffed (overstuffed) behemoth for the past many years!

With around 800 pilots to fly it's aircraft, the presence of fully 602 managers gives us a ratio of 0.75 managers per pilot - clearly an attempt to emulate the late, unlamented national flag-carrier, Nigerian Airlines, where 5000 staffers supported a single functioning aircraft and crew!!

We refer to SAA's announcement of voluntary severance packages, which are offered to all 602 of it's managers - clearly people who could accurately be described as 'deadwood'! Here in sunny SA of course they are more likely known as 'empty jackets' - which describes the penchant for departing the workplace to attend to private business of one type or another, while leaving your jacket on the back of your office chair to assure any visitor (the boss?) that you are still somewhere in the building, beavering away at assigned tasks!

This, plus other revelations of alleged 'misconduct' (what a euphemism) within SAA management ranks, simply reinforces the belief that it is not time to 'restructure' SAA - it is time to totally privatise and/or unbundle this shambolic organisation, and sell it off to private interests who might be in a position to buy it and run it properly, perhaps profitably, but most certainly without massive subsidies from the taxpayer!

The statement by the latest CEO, Ngula just about says it all - "For years nobody has told us to make a profit".

Beam me up, Scotty - there's no intelligent life here!

...and on a lighter - and more pleasurable note..
