Sharapova's Tennis Court Skills Bring Big Endorsement Deal (But Her Looks Don't Hurt)
In December, 2004, young and charasmatic tennis champion Maria Sharapova became the newest sport "ambassador" for luxury Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer.
Only 17 at the time, but already winner of a Wimbledon and WTA championships, Sharapova signed a long-term
agreement cwith TAG Heuer covering
product development, advertising, public relations and merchandising.
"To me, TAG Heuer is the most prestigious luxury
partner I can dream of," Miss
Sharapova said.
In just two seasons the young Russian made her mark on the WTA pro tennis circuit, quickly
advancing to the 4th singles 2004 WTA rankings, and winning two of the
most famous tournaments in tennis.
Jean-Christophe Babin, TAG Heuer's president, said:
"Off the court, her beauty and grace have romanced the fashion world,
with profiles in leading fashion magazines, and the launch of her own
perfume. ... Determined, passionate and
audacious, she has shown extraordinary character in taking on the best
players in professional tennis and winning. At the same time she is
graceful and extraordinarily feminine."
Quite a lot for Miss Sharapova to live up to, don't you think?
TAG Heuer claims that is ambassadors are not just pretty faces with big names. It says that Miss Sharapova will be "directly involved in the development of new TAG Heuer products." In particular, the watch company says, "the new ambassador will share her insights on the TAG
Heuer Formula 1 and 2000/Aquaracer series, which reflects her sporting
allure and distinctively young and feminine appeal."
