March of Dimes

What is March of Dimes WalkAmerica?

WalkAmerica is the walk that saves babies! WalkAmerica, the nation's first and best-loved walking event, takes place in nearly 1,100 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. As the March of Dimes biggest fund-raiser, WalkAmerica supports research and programs to help prevent or treat premature birth, birth defects and other threats to babies' health. Since its beginning in 1970, WalkAmerica has raised more than $1.5 billion to help give every baby a fighting chance.

When is WalkAmerica held?

In most communities, WalkAmerica is held at the end of April. Register to find the walk nearest you.

How can people get involved in WalkAmerica?

They can raise money and walk as individuals; walk as part of a team; be invited by family, friends or business associates to participate; or volunteer their time to register walkers, staff checkpoints and offer refreshments. Walkers ask friends, family members, business associates and others to sponsor them by making a donation to help the March of Dimes save babies.

Why are teams important to the success of WalkAmerica, and how do I form one?

In 2004, 20,000 teams accounted for 80 percent of the more than $96 million raised through WalkAmerica. Teams represent companies, unions, schools, associations and clubs. The number of members in a team can range from 5 to the more than 8,500 walkers who came together from Bank of America in 2004.

To start a team in your company or to find out about corporate sponsorship opportunities, contact your local chapter.

How do walkers get sponsors?

Most walkers are sponsored by co-workers, friends and family. Sponsors also can include neighbors or local businesses. Walkers usually get about 20 sponsors. Many companies also sponsor their walkers or provide matching gifts.

Can I raise money online?

Yes! Using our Online Fund-raising Tool (OFT) is a fun and easy way to get donations and track progress. To get started, simply register and follow the step-by-step instructions.

How should walkers prepare?

Walkers should wear loose-fitting clothing (in layers to accommodate temperature changes), cotton or wool socks (bring an extra pair as a precaution) and walking or tennis shoes. For participants who have diabetes or other special health needs, bring any prescription medications and a snack in case an appropriate one is not provided.

What happens if it rains on WalkAmerica Day?

WalkAmerica takes place rain or shine. However, if the rain makes it dangerous to walk, the route will be shortened and walkers will be credited with the entire length.

What happens at a checkpoint?

The checkpoint is a rest, refreshments and communications stop. Walkers have the opportunity to take a break, get a drink and usually have a snack.

Where does my money go?

WalkAmerica is the March of Dimes single largest fund-raising event, and it plays an integral role in the advancement of our mission. When you team up and raise money in WalkAmerica, you’re helping to fund research and programs that help find answers to the problem of prematurity and other threats to infant health.

What is the March of Dimes?

March of Dimes is the nonprofit health organization that’s leading the way in the fight against prematurity! Every day, 1 in 8 babies in the U.S. is born too soon. That adds up to more than 470,000 babies every year – and the number is on the rise. March of Dimes is dedicated to reducing the rate of premature birth by funding research to find the causes and stop it from happening.

Our advocacy efforts in state and federal government are making it possible for more parents to get health coverage and care for their babies and children. And our educational programs inform women about the signs of preterm labor and what to do if they experience them. With your support, the March of Dimes continually strives to reach the day when every baby can be born full-term and healthy.
