Fish Farms

Rice farmers now raise fish

Cambodia's river deltas and tropical climate are ideal for growing rice, the staple food in most Cambodian households. But rice alone does not provide nutrients necessary for good health. In the rural district of Mesang, MCC provides training for area rice farmers on how to raise fish in small hand-dug ponds.

The benefits of raising fish are many -- in addition to adding nutrients and variety to families' diets, fish also bring added income when sold in local markets. Farmers' survival no longer relies solely on a good rice crop each season.

In 1994 MCC helped open the Potamom Fish Hatchery, now owned by Chak Sam Bat, pictured here. The same year 15 farmers participated in the first training and invested in young fish from the hatchery. Word spread as the project grew more successful, and today more than 550 farmers in the district are raising fish.
