LAKE CRUISES

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

On Sun. Gordon's boat goes around the island, departing Ambarita at 8 am,Tuk2 at 8:30, and Tomok at 9 am. On Wed., Mongoloi s boat starts from Tomok. Both cost Rp750. These pleasure cruises run from sunup to sundown and boast non-stop music and a floating restaurant. The more the merrier. They stop at villages along the way and you can visit the hotsprings. visa extensions: Just give either Mongoloi or Gordon money and your passport, sit on your ass, and they'll go get you a one or even two month visa extension; you pay the full official price, plus their commission which is around Rp1000. dope: The famed Frank Sumatra or Sumatran One comes from Takingeun near Lake Tawar and from the Kutacane area in Aceh Province. But you seldom get the best. Only the third grade makes it down to the island, a coughing weed which parches your throat raw and which also turns over an enormous profit for these islanders. Mostly extended holiday makers and few actual travelers visit Samosir, so most visitors are satisfied with the low grade grass they get. A plastic 'ounce' costs Rp2000, but shop around for a 'bigounce'. Everyone sells on the side of the island facing Prapat and they've all unionized. On Mondays the police go around to the losmens to collect their dues, so take care. For mushrooms head for the cow paddocks in the plateau areas on either side of the mountains south of Tomok and north of Ambarita after a little rain and some sunshine. A kid wants Rp25 for a big handful. One of the kitchens will make up an omelet and even turn out hash or genie cookies if you ask them (you supply).
