SAMOSIR ISLAND

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Rp200 by boat from Prapat. On a busy day boats leave from Samosir Island to Prapat at 9 am, 11 am, and 3 pm, returning with passengers. Boats could leave in either direction at anytime. No matter where you stand on the shore of Lake Toba you see this 630 sq. km island in the middle of it. Blue-grey mountain walls rise vertically from the water's edge and silver threads of waterfalls tumble into forests below. Rich dark soil. Yell 'Horasl' and see the smiles; it means 'Lord protect youl' There's only two or three vehicles on the whole island, but motorcycles are beginning to appear. Sometimes boatloads of Indonesians, Malay, and Singaporean tourists come over from the mainland to look at the Batak houses and the European hippies living in them. During the rainy season mosquitos are vicious, so go prepared. If you're going to stay awhile on Samosir, bring good books. There's lots of music going on all the time, either casettes, or young Betake playing flutes, guitars, xylophones, drums. Try to see the Opera of Samosir which takes place all the time but in different parts of the island. It could be a portrayal of the time when the Batak king held off the Dutch invaders, or similar to a great big night time puppet show with fireworks. It features crooning male vocalists, slapstick skits, and painted girls singing very maudlin and trilling traditional village love songs (ture ture). Indonesian soldiers sometimes have to calm the audience by firing rifles in the air. Usually costs Rp50.
