OLD GRAVES AND TOMBS

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

All over Samosir Island (good ones especially at Tomok, Huta Pangalohan, and Huts Pansur) are elaborately carved old stone sacrophagi mounted by monstrous protective heads (singe) with 3 horns and huge round devil eyes. These skull-caskets (parholian) contain the skulls of high-ranking Batak dead dug up one year after death. Scooped out of solid blocks of stone, their walls slant like the hull of a ship. Seen in fields they appear to be floating on water. Of more recent date are the Batak tribal mausoleums, solid mud brick piles with polished bones inside topped with rough cut wooden crosses. Contemporary tombs are sometimes found in the form of a brightly colored Batak house or a statue of the deceased. See the Soldier's Grave between Tuk2 and Ambarita. burial urn: As you leave Roongurni Huta, 1 km out of town on the right just before a stream, up above the track beside the white tomb surrounded by a brick wall, is a giant pre-Christian burial urn (with a lid) carved out of solid rock. 9 km across the water from Prapat. The main daytourist entry point. Swim down in the lake in the mornings. On Sun. Watch the whole Christian population turn out for church in their best. Hellfire preaching, hallelujahs and praise to Kristus! Up the path is a huge hariara tree (like an oak tree) planted in memory of King Sidabutar, pre-Christian head of the first tribes to migrate to this lake in the 4th Century, A.D., at that time one of the most remote parts of Sumatra. crafts: At least 100 stands are set up for the tourist boats selling artifacts, cloth and clothing. Bargain intensely. Ulos cloths cost Rp1500-8000, Batak calendars with memeographed English explanations (Rp500-1000), old coins, magic medicine staffs, wooden carvings, pustahabark augery books (Rp5000-10,000), whole carved doors (Rpl5,000).
