Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Gunungsitoli: This town is the only place you can cash
travelers cheques on Nias. Meet Dr. Thompson who's writing
a book on the history of the island; she speaks Niah.
stay: The tourist hotel isn't a bargain, the cheapest
room is Rp2000. Stay instead at Losmen Amarasoi, 2 km
south of town on the left. Or else stay at Ketilang
Hotel, Rp500 per bed. from Gunungsitoli: There are some
old rumah adat up the hill from Hilimbawodesolo, 13
km by bus, Rp100. For Telukdalam, a bus makes the trip
to Lahusa, but it's not dependable. Lahusa isn't a tribal
village, just a few houses and a store. From Lahusa
walk into Telukdalam. It takes 4 days to walk from Gunungsitili
80 km south to Telukdalam. Stay in true asli villages
with families or with the kepala desa. You must cross
some rivers and on the way there are two sites where
stone stelae and pyramids have been put to keep them
together by the missionaries some 20 years ago. Ask
in Gunungsitoli where the stelae are. It's about 1 h
days walk to the first group. by boat: To Telukdalam
it's) hours, Rp1650; try the ship Rotella, leaving twice
weekly. It's a lovely trip south by boat, passing by
flying fish, schools of dolphins, and dense jungle all
the way down the coast. Pangkalan Brendan: 92 km N.W.
of Medan. Oil was discovered in Sumatra in 1880 by a
Dutch tobacco planter, A.J. Zjlker, who was given a
lease to drill by the Sultan of Langkat, striking oil
in 1885 at 21 meters. The Pangkalan Brendan well was
the forerunner of the giant Royal Dutch Shell oil company
which started as just an exporter of exotic seashells
from the Indies into Holland. The structure at Pangkalan
Brendan is the first physical equipment of Permina,
Indonesia's first national oil company which began with
just a heap of scrap iron, a few old wells seeping oil,
some rusted pumps, one leaky pipeline, and this first
refinery. The monument has been bombed and burned by
invasions, scorched earth fighers, and Dutch 'police
actions'. Destroyed and then rebuilt 3 times, the placque
states 'No reason exists to be overproud, as this ruin
proves'.
