Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

92 km N.W. of Medan. Oil was discovered in Sumatra in
1880 by a Dutch tobacco planter, A.J. Zijlker, who was
given a lease to drill by the Sultan of Langkat, striking
oil in 1885 at 21 meters. The Pangkalan Brandan well
was the forerunner of the giant Royal Dutch Shell oil
company which started as just an exporter of exotic
seashells from the Indies into Holland. The structure
at Pangkalan Brandan is the first physical equipment
of Permina, Indonesia's first national oil company which
began with just a heap of scrap iron, a few old wells
seeping oil, some rusted pumps, one leaky pipeline,
and this first refinery. The monument has been bombed
and burned by invasions, scorched earth fighers, and
Dutch 'police actions'. Destroyed and then rebuilt 3
times, the placque states 'No reason exists to be overproud,
as this ruin proves'.
