Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

A relaxing village of a few hundred people 80 km west
of Medan and 15 km from Bohorok on the edge of the Langkat
Reserve, deep in the wilds of North Sumatra. The most
memorable part of a visit here is the ride out to the
reserve, and the stay in Bukit Lawang where the pace
is slow and the people easy-going. On one side of Bukit
Lawang are rubber plantations and on the other side
rainforest and river country; the real Sumatra. getting
there: It takes about 5 hours to reach, but quicker
if it's not raining. The bus departs each day at 2 or
3 pm from Stasiun Sei Wampu, Medan. You bump in at dusk.
A more reliable, less crowded alternative is to charter
a landrover from Nitour, JI. Prof. H. Moh. Yamin 28
A, Tel. 23191, for about Rp20,000. Before going, see
DINAS P.P.A. (Perlundungan clan Pengawetan Alam), JI.
Sei Galang 26, Medan, for permission, a Rp500 charge.
For Indonesians, free entry. If you haven't got the
forestry permit they have forms at the pasangrahan in
Bukit Lawang; they'll squeeze the Rp500 out of you there.
Try to arrive on weekdays because up to 400 revellers
and picnicers come out from Medan on Sunday.
