INTRODUCTION

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Irian Jaya is Indonesia's most spectacular region for tourism. It's the biggest and and most intact natural history museum in existence- all 260,000 sq km of it (the same size as Spain or California). This province comprises roughly the whole western half of the island of New Guinea, the 2nd largest island in the world after Greenland, and makes up 22% of the total land surface of Indonesia. It's the least visited, the emptiest, the most remote Indonesian island. Only a million people live here and its capital, Jayapura, is 3520 km from Jakarta. Decades behind Java, it is the least economically developed territory of Indonesia. Note: The best map of Irian Jaya is Neder/ands Nieuw-Guinea, 1:1,750,000 published by Topografisk, Delft 1956. getting there: No special clearance is required now to enter Irian Jaya and only in certain areas and under certain circumstances must you report to the police station to obtain a surat ja/an (travel permit). If you want to go to this territory the Indonesian consulate in the country you get your visa in might ask to see adequate travelers cheques before issuing you a visa. The weekly Garuda flight from Surabaya to Biak costs Rp68,000. From Biak there are connecting flights to Jayapura. Merpati flies to Biak from Ambon. Cheapest of all is to fly into Jayapura from Papua New Guinea. If you pay for all your Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya flights in Australia it could work out cheaper still.
