PEOPLE OF NIAS

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

The Niah might be related to the hill tribes of Burma, their ancestors having migrated to the island from 3000-500 B.C., but their exact origin is misty. They have a culture and practices all their own. They speak a language most closely related to Malagasy, yet their sculpture shows uncanny similarities to woodcarvings made by the Nagas of Assam in the high Himalayas. Today most of the 200,000 people of Nias and Batu Islands are mainly rice growers. Besides its nutritional value, the pig is of outstanding importance as a status-symbol and as a sacrificial animal. For great cultic festivities large numbers are slaughtered. An exhorbitant fee of up to Rp100,000, plus gold, old silver coins and pigs, are all paid to the parents for a bride. The north is vastly different culturally from the south. In contrast to the megalithic culture of the south, in the north, you find oval-shaped houses and idols used to drive away spirits and to treat sicknesses; resembling more a neolithic culture. In northern Nias peoples' features are finer and their skin is fair.
