TENGGARONG
Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Means
'Steps of the Highest'. A former sultan's town 39 km
upriver from Samarinda. From Samarinda riverboats leave
opposite the big mosque every hour or so from dawn until
4 pm for Tenggarong. Pass little villages with ramshackle
old timber buildings while slowly crisscrossing the
river; the boat stops at kampungs and timber loading
stages along the way. If you take the riverboat as far
as to Loa Kulu, Rp200, an oplet travels the remaining
12 km to Tenggarong for Rpl50. The old wooden town of
Tenggarong is at its best very early in the moming when
the river mist turns the peeling pastel painted and
weathered gray houses into a magic land. The town was
founded 192 years ago and every Sept. 26-28th there
are big anniversary ceremonies when the Bedaya is danced
and Dayak tribes have blowpipe and rattan lashing competitions.
There are two becaks in the whole town and many bicycles.
People are really friendly and honest. They're used
to tourists ('Hellow Turisl') and there's a minimum
of officialdom to contend with.
