SIMALUNGUN
Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

One
of the branches of the Batak people whose name means
'he that is lonely, quiet or sad'. Simalunguns are gentle
and soft-mannered and have many sad nostalgic songs.
They speak with a slow lilting intonation. These people
were beginning to evolve from sedentary ladang cultivators
into a feudal society by the time the Dutch first arrived.
They weren't conquered until 1910. Half of them are
animist, the other half Islamic and Christian, though
all atend animist ceremonies such as the 'group hairwashing
ritual' (erpangir). Dance is particularly popular in
the Simalungun district. The most macabre is a mask-dance
performed at funerals while the dead body is being washed.
The happiest is the Marriage Dance (Sitalasari) in which
the bride and bridesmaids hold flowers in one hand and
slap their hips with the other while gliding across
the floor in suzv-Q's. The Farewell Dance (Tading Maham
Na Tading) is put on by all the young girls of the village
when a man leaves, warning him 'Don't marry anybody
abroad, just come back to us.'
